are springers the most adaptable working dogs?

Recommended Posts

I've got a spanielx collie and he can do nearly everything (I'd call that versatile) he's not too shabby on retrieving although could do with some work (he's only 2 so plenty time) hes great for ferreting and tracking down anything with a scent (even got him doing money!) He has longer legs than a spaniel and moves a lot faster and is very agile (will retrieve the dummy from over a 4- 5 foot fence). He also does course rabbits when told to to the point of catching (although I think Ive just been lucky.)

His collie side shows in the form of a guard dog for some reason lol and the other typical collie attributes.

I think hes a great all rounder and wouldnt have any other dog in my home.

ave got a spriniger spaniel and ave had them for years because my dad trains them. one past away there a few years ago and i didnt think we would get another one like him. the way he worked, retrieved and how steady he was but ive now got one and he is 2 n half years old, a would say hes jist about fully trained and he is some dog. had a bit a trouble with retrieving with him as a pup n was ready to sell him but when we persavered with him n took him to a shoot it wasnt long before he was retreivin the live game. sometimes i feel sorry for him he works that hard, his tails always cut and his face always bleeding, they dont stop until there put in the boot of the car, my opinion is the springer is the all round gundog but cockers are just as gd

Never been a fan of springers, to jumpy  for me personally, but I think that for the gun a cocker and lab would be my choice and as for versitle Iv meet many a collie that can do any job you ask them to... and they get it right the first time round. I think everyone has a preference so it just depends. :)

You obviousley have not seen that meny and no collie alive can touch a good springer as a gun dog imo.

and ofcourse Harry who is on the other page (JordKil's ColliexSpringer), each of these three are exceptional. Keen, quick and efficent. Each to their own mate, I just personally prefer collies.
