cattle dog and kelpie x ?

Recommended Posts

I've found there's quite a lot of disparity of type within kelpies in this country. I'm not certain but I think it's down to the fact that, as far as I'm aware, all the imported dogs were from working stock and were imported for working reasons. As a result their physical attributes aren't as standardized as their working ones.

As an example, I've heard of some which are 24" tall and others, including my little bitch, which are less than 18". I've also seen a fair few with floppy ears and when I bought my old dog Rust, over nine years ago, some of the shepherd's kelpies were so tall and had such floppy ears I thought they were Huntaways.

I had to read that a few times before it sunk in Neil.. Of course it would make sense to put worker to worker and that's how it should be i mean who gives a feck about big ears when they can heard sheep like feck ;)

Where it starts going wrong is when a union`s allowed to take place up on looks alone.

I`v just been looking through some of Firemans old post`s from last year and seen something that i realy fancy :D

very nice dogs here lads. wondering why this cross aint more popular is it because that they are more vocal than the border, beardie or acd.as this would be a negative for lampers or maybe they are not so easy to come by.

A striking looking bitch Jigsaw  Very true Mike not everything turns out the same and sometime`s even an educated hand cannot sway things in his favor.

I have always fancied a first cross ACDXGreyhound something heavy built like a bus legs like cricket stumps you know the type ;)

That chocolate dog in the edge of the picture Mike is that one of yours?

She is the pure bred bitch that I have the mother of the pups 19" and a real good bitch I.M.O.

She is what the aussie's call a "red cloud" it took me a long time to bond with this bitch and get the best out of her as I didn't have her from a pup , they really are a one man dog sometimes  but we are 2 1/2 years on in our relationship and this bitch would walk through fire if I asked her to and a bloody good guard dog around my yard to, venture in and she'll nail ya if she don't know ya :D

Sheamus, I've just re-read it myself and I can see what you mean; it was a bit confusing.

As for why there aren't more of them, I think it's probably down to two things. The first is that many see them as "exotics" and the second is because a lot of studs are only available to "approved bitches only." As an example, a gentleman who lives in the village up the road from me took a long time to find somebody willing to let them use their stud dogs on his kelpie/collie as it's not used on sheep. Most of the kelpie cross lurchers I know of were bred by people using their own field-sport kelpies. Personally, I hope that attitude lasts a long time as it would be a shame to reduce any of their working instinct. :toast:

Sheamus, that Bitch that Fireman kept back from his litter is Built like a Brick Sh*thouse, i think she will turn out a powerful little Bitch. The Dog Pup i have from the litter is still a fair old lump but at the same time, he still looks Racy, my Pup looks very much like Chalkwarrens Fabulous old Bitch ' Speckle '. As i said in a earlier post, i will get some pic's up as soon as my Mate gets the time to call and put them up for me as i am F*cked when it comes to Hi-Tech stuff

Mike, that is a stunning looking Bitch you have there

The ears on that exotic would put the Bazza`s to shame Mike ;) But i can understand why you were her second owner even at an early point in her life. some folk just don't know what the feck there getting into when they purchase this type of dog.. She looks a nice type.

Neil i don't think the Kelpie/collie owner found it hard to get a lining for his Bitch because it did`nt work Sheep. It had probably more to do with it having Collie in it i mean why feck up good blood.

How long would it be then before the 3/4 kelpiex collie`s were passed off as full kelpie`s and then go on to pollute future pure lines of stock??

Caterpillar that stuff what Fireman bred sure is an acquired taste and not what most would want which is a good job realy but for the specialist amongst us we can see just how appealing they really are ;)

I`ll look forward to seeing some picture`s of your dog  oh and when`s Fireman planning some more :D

Have to say chaps some outstanding looking dogs there, the kelpie cross looks to be a more racier type than the cattle dog cross.I've taken some pics of my bitch and she is a chunk with "legs like cricket stumps" lol,not quite sure where her thick coat comes from mind. She's five months and a bit now and like i said i'm happy with how she's turning out both in temprement and body, time will tell though.Sheamus i didn't breed the bitch i just had her at mine to rear the litter and find her a new home, the dam is now at a polo stables in the new forest with 2 other cattle dogs to run around with all day.If my bitch proves her worth then who knows what the future brings with breeding her but all thats a few years of work away yet mate.

These dogs won't ever be everybodies cup of tea but real grafters they are and imo probebly nearer to old time lurchers than a modern collie cross, guarding, hearding, catching and not looking like a greyhound.Definetly not dogs for the novice handler but ones caperble of doing anything asked of them.

Fireman I see that you also have a dreaded plummer too lol what's it work like fella ?

I've got 2 of them bud and they do enough for me to be happy with bushing, ratting and earthwork,my bitch is a better earth dog but the dog in the pic has one of the best noses i've ever seen. He'll follow a line like a hound full speed head down,i've just lost my adult lurcher(pts) but i'll be working my pup along side the terriers and even now she's getting the hang of being ready for anything that bolts from bushes or cover. She does seem to be sharp of eye but as yet she's still to slow to catch a running bunny, won't be long before she does catch as she is using her brain well(fingers crossed lol).

It looks like a bit of Hancocks Beardie Border blood?? Only kidding Fireman ;):D

Another excellent specimen Mustelid and it`s good to see at least two out of that litter went to knowledgeable genuine working home`s.
