Guest MOLLY
Can anyone identify what would be making these holes please? When i moved in there were loads of mole hills, the dogs dug them without mercy and it appears they have left....no hills have emerged for several weeks now, but im now getting loads of these holes...def not rats but other than that im at a loss. The holes are only being used once...if they were being used continuously the dogs would be interested but they are not...they do dig the odd one up, but i think these are fresh ones in the mornings. Ive put dogs next to holes so you can get an idea of the size.... MOLL. Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
You sure they arent rats Moll...?...could it be voles.... Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
Not definate, but there is absolutley no other evidence of rats...never seen any, no dropping, no damage and the holes seem to appear then never get used again?. Some of the holes are smaller than these on the piccies but didnt show up well on the photo. The tunnels go everywhere underground, you can be digging then just hit air? Is there something called a feild vole...bigger than normal ones? MOLL. Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
Looking at the photos I would have said rats Very strange that they are apearing overnight We turned up at a farm this winter to rat a hawthorn hedge next to some game cover, I have never seen so many rat holes, literally hundreds, yet the dogs showed little interest and we only took 4 rats. Who knows where they went Quote Link to post

Who knows where they went I think that is the sign of a good terrier though. They know not to bother with something with slightly old scent, the runs probs were being used but had not been very recently, one of mine will dig at anything with the remotest smell, so i know only to trust it if the more steady ones show interest . Millet has seen the holes he can perhaps explain better than me? MOLL. Quote Link to post

chartpolski 20,372
My lurcher pup caught a rat in the back garden when the snow was here, so I set live traps and spring traps. I caught rats and voles. I was supprised to get both in a relativly small garden. they both seemed to be living under the decking and shed. All gone now I don,t leave the dogs leftover food outside. Cheers. Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
try setting a trap. Think i will Almost sure its not rats though, they wouldnt make new ones as repetively as this for no reason. New ones again this morning, and when i was watering the plants i filled one of the holes and the ground fell away near the surface in a line, so they are not burying very deep? MOLL.
