Bitch in Pup advice needed

Recommended Posts

Guest snatch flcc

I have a bitch in pup and she is due in about 3-4 weeks, all my dogs are kept outdoors and I am not sure if I should let her have them in her kennel and run which is insulated, warm and she is used to it or should I bring her indoors?

I live in a flat so it will be a lot of hassle to bring her inside as she is not house trained but I will do it if need be. I am reading a book called The Book of the Bitch which is very informative but its all about having the puppies indoors.

Any advice appreciated as this is the first time I have had to do this,

thanks

the litter will be fine outdoors, just make sure theres plenty of bedding, and if you want to be extra safe, a heat lamp will help even more... :good:

I no litters that have been born and raised outside and were fine..

all the best. :yahoo:

I would go with the individual bitch Snatch, if shes happy enough outside and your ok with being out there to keep an eye on her, then she should be fine, theres advantages of bringing her indoors though and that is that you can keep and eye on the proceedings much better than if you were huddled up in a corner of the kennel. If you usea large crate the housetraining thing wont be an issue, make a nice bed for her out of blankets or shredded paper and drape a blanket over it to make it like a den and she will soon get used to it. You can let her out at regular intervals and she will get the hang of going outside for the toilet.

If shes a maiden bitch and its your first time, you really want to have her somewhere that she feels happy and that is warm and well lit so you can see whats happening. lurcher bitches usually pop them out fairly easily so you might only need to keep a watchful eye from across the room, she will do the rest herself. Other bitches like you right there beside them for reassurance.

With maiden bitches I usually always bring them indoors, i breed staffs as well as lurchers and they sometimes need a wee bit of help, you miught have to pull a puppy out if it gets stuck, being indoors in the warm with the kettle and phone and all the other home comforts is handy! lol :D

Once the pups get to 2-3 weeks they go outside and stay there until they are sold.

Having said that, I had one maiden bitch who hated the stairs and she pupped within a few days of my staffie bitch who got really territorial and I had bother getting the lurcher bitch to go down the stairs while the staffie bitch was going nuts growling etc in the other room, I decided the best thing to do was keep the staff bitch indoors with her pups, and put the lurcher bitch outside in the whelping kennel and I plugged in the baby alarm and went to bed (my dogs always seem to pup at 4am lol :D ) and sure enough, early hours of the morning I could hear her making a bed, whirling round and round then i heard her panting, so I got wrapped up and went outside and kept an eye on her, she squeezed them all out no problems, I just sat and watched, didnt need to help her at all, some bitches are naturally good mothers.

The most important thing is to keep calm and have everything you need on hand, a couple of towels incase you get a pup with fluidy lungs so you can rub it and swing the fluid out, a pair of surgeon type gloves incase you need to pull a stuck puppy out, and lots of newspaper are the main essentials. If you can rig up a heat lamp in wintertime that would be a good idea, summertime you should be OK without one depending on how warm and well insulated your kennels are.

If you want any help or advice Im happy to help, if you want to bend my ear about anything to do with pups or wehlping feel free, I have had lots of sleepless nights with whelping bitches, so would be happy to help if I can :good::D
