I believe its possible to fit a peugeout 1.9TD engine into a vitara. Can anyone explain the work/costs involved & if its worth it. Think the cylinder head has blown on mine & need it sorted as soon as possible. Any advice greatly appreciated.

I don't know of any specialist Suzuki breakers "oop north", but there probably is one. If you go on suzuki4u.co.uk you may get some local information. I'm with webber on this, I would not consider the work of a engine type change, without having a look inside the sickly one.

The head gasket blowing is quite common on Vitara's, and is not a big job if no other problems are apparent.(Not unknown for cracking between the centre cylinders, this scraps the block really) As the cambelt has to come off, most folks change this at the same time. A company called Rhino Rays sells (I think) a conversion kit for the Peugeot if you want to go this route. The engine though has to be an old model without all the electronics of the later ones. This is a problem in itself. Most Pug diesels of the right type will be on 100k miles by now. Another engine used is the VW TD, again pre- electronics. Unless the Vit is a particularly good young one, the expense of a conversion would be hard to justify, I think. If the engine is indeed knackered, a good low miles Suzuki out of a crash damaged or rotten vehicle would be best in my opinion.

I'm waiting to find out what the damage is. The radiator is finished aswell, The worst case scenario will be £500 exc VAT. Thats the head gasket set, skimmed, new rad, timing belt fitted etc & the towing away. The vitara has no rust on it & is a good example, could do with a lift but will have 2 wait til I can afford it.

A PUG 19TD ENGINE WON'T WORK BECAUSE OF THE ENGINE IN THE PUG TILTS BACKWARDS TO PUT IT IN TO A VITARA THE ENGINE WILL HAVE TO BE STRAIGHT,THERE FORE THE OIL PICKUP WON'T WORK,ALSO THERE ARE ON SIDE MOUNTINGS,THE EXAUST IS THE WRONG SIDE AND IT WILL SIT TO HIGH AND THE BONNIT

WOULD HAVE TO BE MODIFIED.IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO PUT A DIESEL ENGINE IN THE JEEP YOU SHOULD LOOK AT A FORD THEY WILL FIT WITH THE LEAST OF MODS.

P.S. YOU DIDN'T SAY WHAT ENGINE IS ALREADY FITTED?IF IT'S A PETROL WHO EVER QOUTED YOU £500 IS RIPPING YOU OFF AS I REBUILT ONE TWO YEARS AGE COMPLETELY FOR LESS THAN £250[NOT INCLUEDING THE RAD.]

HOPE THIS HELPS.

It turns out it ain't just the head, the piston has melted summat in the engine which can't be repaired so its definitely a new engine needed. If there is an easier conversion which isn't gonna cost a fortune I'd be interested. Any info appreciated on where I can buy theses conversion kits.

why comment on something you clearly know f**k all about ?????????????

the 1.9 engine as been fitted into more cars and vans than most other engines so you could fit one in , people have done it .

and £500 is about the going rate £120 recovery £100 radiator £50 head gasket £50 head skimming £20 timing belt . £30 pound an hour labour charge

soon mounts up when a motor is in a garage .

personaly if the motor was 100% sound apart from the engine id get a conversion if not id scrap it and buy another cheap motor
