I think for that money you could be looking at something like a Cobra Merlin maybe, but I can't use that fancy gear so listen to better clued up people lol.

I think a laser is a laser and an IR illuminator is like a torch except it has an IR lens infront of the light, again more layman stuff that could well be incorrect.

I will keep it short ....

Budget 500 quid including any laser illumintator

Prefer something that mounts as a day scope adapter.

What is the difference between an ordinary laser and an IR laser?

Dave

Probably the Cobra Merlin with the 90mW Dipol L3 Laser option. Should give you a reasonable image out to 80 yards. An ordinary laser operates at a particular wavelength ... an IR laser operates at a particular wavelength of between 780nm and 900nm.

There are two types of illuminators for night vision: lasers and LEDs. The former pack a lot more punch and are lighter, but a bit more expensive. The LED illuminators generally give a "cleaner" and "clearer" flood of IR light out to ranges of about 50 yards, depending on the power, but have considerably less range. Talking of power, a 90mW laser is equivalent to ~ a 500mW LED illuminator. Lasers are powerful and care must be taken not to direct them in your eye for whatever reason.
