Very interesting information.. I remember catching crays in the park pond as a kid.. Think I might have to give it a go using this info.. How would I go about finding suitable waters around here? (Halifax, West Yorks) And how would I go about getting permission?

Hi there Murph Great piece very interesting, I hope that even after a few years I can get some futher info on this from you or another member, first of all the link for the map does seem to work for me, however as you say that you are from Lincolnshire you may know about the River Witham and if there is a large population of none native crays, I will be moving close to Bardney Lock and after hearing of the extent of the problem caused by these foreign crayfish in particular the Signal crayfish and being prone to a bit of crustacean tail I would like to see if I can get involved.

The question I had was about the week of purging in fresh water, is this to be done in a fish tank with a water pump? I am guess yes but a confirmation would be great.

Hello mate not too many in the witham but there are a few. I was working down south commercially. Yes the license includes keeping aqauarium crays and purging can be speeded up in various ways. We are at the end of the season now though.....

Its these dark winter nights you sit here reading and think the boys on here are great, Thanks Murph great advice. You in Somerset fultime now Murph? and secondly, this is part of my summer sorted I reckon. All I need to do is find a place to put the traps when I get them. Anyone know of any places in Wilts up near the motorway where there's a problem?

Helpfull write up... i work in land drainage and quiet a few of the dykes that we have pumping stations has large populations of signals, i know this because the grab on weedscreen cleaners pull out not only weed and debris but dozens of signals. I have also been busy stripping down a couple of pumps and found crays inside them... think when the water warms up il have a crack at them!
