.223 - Howa 1500 with thumbhole laminate stock and heavy stainless barrel, with MTC Viper 6-24x56, generally fed el cheapo Wolf ammo which is awful but the animals keep falling over and it's cheap

.243 - RWS Titan 6 wood/stainless with Hawke Reflex 4-12x50 scope (yes it's rubbish but my god it works well!!), fed with 58gr Norma Vmax and 85gr Federal w/ Sierra Gamekings

.22 Hornet - Brno CZ527 with Nikko Diamond 4-12x42, fed with whatever I can get my hands on

.22 LR - CZ 452 Style with Nikko Nighteater 4-16x50, fed with el cheapo Magtech (unlike the 223 Wolf, very accurate and expands nicely on small game, unlike Eley)

And every now and again my Ruger 10/22T sees bunny action too...

Hi Mr Logic

I have just joined the site today and I am aware that this is an old thread but I have a question for you regarding your Titan rifle if that's ok !

I am seriously considering buying one and wanted your opinion on how good they are etc . I have only read the magazines reports etc but really wanted to hear from somebody that uses one. I would be grateful for your opinion.

Firstly, welcome! :)

I have sold my Titan, and regret doing so. Swapped to a 204 for a while but that didn't work too well so it went in favour of a shotgun.

The Titan was a good rifle, but IMHO let down by some issues. The balance was pretty good, it was very accurate as well.

However, the main issue for me is that the mounting length is very long so restricts you in scope choice. In addition, the receiver is aluminium, because the bolt locks into the barrel. That allows it to be a switch-barrel, but for me a switch barrel is pretty pointless, too many other variables so I'd rather have a separate rifle!

The downside to the alu receiver is that the scope mounts are screwed into weak, soft metal, so keeping them well anchored and not breaking the receiver was not something I managed to do. Equally I'm a reasonably big bloke and tend to give scope mounting a touch more welly than I should, so likely user error. Also, the mounting holes were not drilled true, so mounting could be fun.

The trigger is reasonable, in that there is little creep and it's not overly heavy. Chances are you'll like it, but I prefer my triggers nice and light, and I couldn't lighten or change the RWS trigger.

The key question... would I buy another one? ...

No.

Reason is pretty simple. They are priced somewhere between Remington SPS and a Tikka T3. Both of those have more going for them than the RWS, or there's Howa - cheap and bloody accurate. Remington/Howa have masses of aftermarket stuff so if you don't get on with the rifle as supplied you can fix easily. Tikka has a good trigger anyway, a receiver which is a solid straight bit of steel, and a barrel which will be probably better quality than the RWS.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the info it is very helpful indeed as I really only fancied one because of it's lighter weight and box magazine. I have a Sako 75 Varmint that I use as a fox rifle but it is extremely heavy ! . I want a lightweight .243 for roe that I can carry around for general stalking etc and also something that has an adjustable trigger as I like them light just like yourself. I have heard good stuff about the Howa and the BRNO but as ever it comes down to price etc ! looking for something under or around £600 with the rifle weight as a premium buying factor. I am not as young as I was !!

You have definetly swayed me away from buying it as those points would annoy me as well. Once again thanks for your sharing your experiences with me it is much appreciated and thanks for the prompt reply.

Won't go wrong with either a Howa or a CZ. CZ has a better trigger, once adjusted, than Howa. Is it also supplied by Edgar Brothers who are a much more organised operation than Highland Outdoors, so better backup is available.

Howa has more accessories, like scope mounts and triggers, available though and is almost always supplied screwcut.

Really, pick one, they'll both do exactly what you want without issue.

Hi....I have just bought the gun last week ....i have been out just to try it ...fired about 17 or 18 shells through it with no probs...Iam just waiting on the farmer gettin some crops cut and i will give it a good workout on the pigeons.....To be honest i was lookin at the midland 800 series but ended up with this after i went to the gunshop....i have read a few posts on the hatsan ...some good some bad.....but it all comes down to money in my situation, At the end of the day it cost me £350 which in my eyes is excellent value ..it is brand new ....will fire steel shot without any worry ...comes with the 3 yr warranty ...what more can you ask for ....For me it is mainly just a vermin gun and occassionally it will get an outing at the pheasant and geese ....so hope i hav'nt bored you to death but its just the way i see it ....hope it helps...cheers Davy
