crayfish trapping

Does anyone have any info or ideas on making a home made crayfish trap.

I think i will be able to put it to good use in the coming weeks.

Ideally it would be cheap and portable i.e quite small.

I have pondered on the idea of a large pop bottle with the end cut off with the screw top enlarged and inserted back inside the bottle and a load of holes in it.....if you get the idea.

Any help appreciated

You can buy crayfish traps on ebay for as little as a fiver,but make sure they are well hidden when set.Or get the kids down there with crab lines and bacon rind

yeah i have purchased a couple before but lost them, just fancied trying my hand at making one or two.

You wouldnt fit many in a big bottle.

 

The old type traps were made from bent willow.

 

If you want something light small and portable then you best bet is still buyin one as they compact down into dinerplate size. I get 4 in a rucksack but could get more.

When I was about 11 years old (60 years ago) we used to catch crayfish using a bicycle wheel. We would bait the Wheel with meat of some kind by tying it to the spokes then lay in in the water with a thin rope through the spindle hole (usually a bit of clothes line) and tie it to a branch the crayfish would take the bait and hold on to it.

I don't know if you could do it these days with the American species having invaded our rivers and lakes.

Use an old rabbit cage trap with a wire funnel entrance hole at the opposite end to the door. Chuck some rabbit offal or a half opened tin of cat food in the cage, tie the door closed, and after securing it to a cord........chuck it in the water. If the crayfish are in great numbers..........the cage will be full in a couple of hours.

Traps off ebay real cheap and work!

Just one thing, its not uncommon to get an otter in one of these traps.

If they get in they get stuck and drown!!
