Hearing protection

Hi folks,

 

Reading back over some old threads on another site I have bought Peltor Sporttac ear protectors. Chose them as a member there rates them very highly and I had been thinking of a pair of peltors anyway

 

I'd also like to try ear plugs inside them for maximum protection. I'm naturally averse to the idea of sticking things in my ears, but I figure damaging my hearing to be the worse of two evils.

 

So, question is, which ear plugs? Not looking for fancy, just really effective as I'll be using this set up when I'm zeroing, doing any targets or waiting in ambush.

Just back from the club clay shoot and the ones I use are fantastic wish I had known about em years ago.

 

Yo go to a hearing centre and they stick a piece of cotton in your ear and then take a mould of your ear with mastic/sylycon (spelling) then send em to you a month or six weeks later. £70 though but well worth the money in my opinion. Emtec noise breaker 01743 709480 I saw them advertised in BASC magazine.

 

You can hear birds singing but when you shoot they cut the noise out.

Hi mate, have a look on e-bay for SONIC ear plugs, They are fitted with a valve system that allows normal conversation but valve closes with tebulance of air pressure caused by sudden loud noises ( I THINK )-- anyway my mate has them and says they are very good. not sure of price..

myself being a bit tight use the disposable type used at my work.

is this for your scatter gun or rifle john?? if i have to i either use x ministrey electronic ear protectors or those tiny yellow fit in ya ear jobbies.they work well...pm me and ill send you some if you want to try them...i made the mistake of asking a mate for some to fill a sock with to use it for rear rifle rest instead of a sand bag..i ended up with 2000 sets of ear plugs!!!!!!!..

You get better protection with ear muffs than ear plugs as the sound can still get though the bone just behind you ear well thats what the ear nose and throat specialist told me when i was at the hospital for tinnitus

I have been a loader on 4 commercial west country shoots for 15 years and with a typical drive. a gun can shoot between to 200 shots so hearing protection is a must. I have over the years used quite a few types - always electronics I need to listen to what my gun is saying.

 

At present I use Peltor Tacticalsport bins and rate them very highly.

 

I know from your thread I am preaching to the converted in your case, but to the non converted I would like to say this.

 

Unless you are putting bins over ear plugs you are putting your hearing at risk - even the plastic moulded ones that cost >£300 a pair. I loaded for an American Ear specialist who confirmed this. His take on it is that whilst sound travels down your ear canal the important bits to your hearing are directly behind the back of your ear and whilst plugs etc muffle sound shock, sound waves vibrate against the bone behind the ear and will /can cause problems in later life.

 

Watch the Olympics this year (if they bother to show it) and count how many shooters are not wearing bins but have plugs

john is your rifle got a mod fitted ? or do you shoot it with out one then ?
