thanks for the advice ,gone and brought the canon 400d with the 18 - 55 lens £409 summet from argos.got home i opened up the box to find there was no camera.straight away i thought there was no way i was getting my pennies back.straight back to argos to find they had gave me the wrong box so thankfully they gave me another.i really didnt think i was going to get it back so easy.anyway its a great camera but now im after a decent lense with a better zoom if anyone recomend a good un it will be well appreciated.will get some pics up asap to show how im doing and expect loads of questions untill i get the grasps of using it.thanks again .

The IS allows you to use slightly slower shutter speeds when using it, but they do have two stabilser functions one is for panning shots as shown http://web.canon.jp/imaging/lens/expression/index5.html . There not essential but nice to have, I'm sure the optics are slightly better than the standard lens you mentioned also.

I can second Ian Kerr known as Kerso on ebay, top fella and really good prices and delivery is fast as feck. Bought canon 24-70- and 70-200 from him.
