i had demodeptic mange in one of my bull terriers used benzo on mine and nu stock had no problems after the initial out break

I dont think this is mange, as other's have said it causes itching & really aggresive sore red patches. Perhaps it's more of a mid allergy- even grass can cause it.

if anything its possibly a food allergy or a protein problem....greyhounds suffer quite badly on theyre back ends if the protein content is too high etc...try a different food like a gluten free complete or talk to a couple of food places to see if they have anything based on allergy problems might help!

ive seen this with hay/straw but generally its a rash and the hair loss the rash being quite harsh! i know this is an old thread hopefully you have it sorted now if not it may help someone else....

I also thought mange was sore and itchy until i read this.................................

What does demodectic mange do to the dog?

Surprisingly, a dog with demodectic mange does not itch severely, even though it loses hair in patches. Areas of bare skin will be seen. The hair loss usually begins on the face, especially around the eyes. When there are only a few patches of hair loss, it is termed localised demodectic mange. If the disease spreads to many areas of the skin, it becomes generalised demodectic mange

Although shes not loosing hair in patches it seems to be thinning all over. The food she was on was high in protein but she had been on it since being weaned.

I have been advised to put her on Arden Grange Salmon and Rice, which i have since ordered also to give her a course of sulpher tablets and mix flax seed oil sunflower oil and olive oil altogether to put on her food. Then treat her with Advocate from the vet.

Shes off to the vet Mon. so will see what he says.

Thanks Guys.

P.S she has been having a garlic capsule for about the last fortnight (1 per day)

My Patt pup arrived with swollen eyes, itching while she walked and I took her to the vet.

After the routine skin scrapes, demodectic mange was diagnosed (I saw the slide under the microscope - it was fascinating).

Anyway, pup was prescribed some severe bath stuff (OP petrol stinking dip) that you put in a bucket, dunked her in and then she had to dry off on her own. It was horrible and she minded so much and was very uncomfortable and miserable. She had to have this bath twice a week too. I was beginning to see her dreading me coming near her and resenting me (not a very good start imo).

I talked to the vet saying I thought this treatment was cruel, looked at various options on the internet, another talk with vet and the upshot was he said that pup must go on having regular but weekly dunkings but they would lower the dose of "shampoo" (that stunk like petrol). I said that was fine and they could do the bath.

So, every Monday (I go and do my messages), I would drop off my pup at the vets, she would be bathed by vet nurses and walked until she was dry and she could hate them and not me.

It cost more money, obviously, but it cured my pup. She doesn't resent me for a very painful treatment - skin scrapes alone had her screaming as they have to do three and scrape until they get blood, the dip left her skin crawling and she was twitching with it, and then sleeping for 48 hours. This was my brand new pup and I was trying to bond with her and get to know her and so I was doing this to her! It was not the start I intended.

Oh yes, I found her sister and mother had it too. I also had her spayed at the first opportunity as I was told that you don't breed from pups with this. I didn't mind as every rescue home seems to be full of unwanted Patts!

Best of luck.

Good luck, have slight experience of this and if nothing medical would suggest fresh fish in diet. ;)

Are there any other affects of too high a protein?

I did have it suggested to me yesterday that it could be that. Tink is very often hot and pants a bit which im told could suggest too much protein and i guess the only way to cool down would be to shed her coat.

If this is the case what would you guys say is an acceptable amount of protein. Her food at the mo is 26% (kirklands Chicken and Rice) I have since ordered Arden Grange Salmon and rice but think that is still 25%

Many years ago, I went to look at the dogs at Battersea Dogs Home. None of them caught my eye and I asked about the ones "not for sale", so to speak, as my friend was the vet there.

They led me round the back to see a row of ill/ready to be pts dogs and I saw my dog, Sally - probably Bedlington/Whippet neutered female with sarcoptic mange was the description. I immediately convinced the staff to let me have her and went to see a homeopathic vet. He gave her some pillules and put her on a diet of lamb mince (you can buy it fairly cheap in the freezer section of supermarkets) and white rice (boiled up together - just get it to the boil, switch off the heat and leave it cook and cool down for the rest of the day). Nothing else, never changed and she was much much better. Her skin calmed down and grew back. If you went "off piste" and fed her leftovers, other dog food, her skin would flare back up again.

She lived a long and happy life.

Back from the vets. Vet didnt have a clue really. Said it wasnt mange or anything like that, asked me did she scratch? NO do i bath her? NO.

I mentioned the protein thing and he nodded. I asked what her protein in take should be he said between 14 and 16%. Her current food is 26%.

He gave me some advocate which i was glad of as a friend of mine had recommended i get that. I shall do everything else this friend has suggested.

The vet said give it 8 weeks as it can take a while then see how she is after that

Try find a sensitive food- dont use Bakers- then again I dont think anyone with a decent working dog would use it. More colourings & additives than a tube of smarties.

It makes you bit paranoid but check out the meat/ash & protein that's in biscuits if you cant got down the fresh meat & rice route. You'll be suprised the difference in meat quantity & protein levels. I've 3 dogs & they are all on different food, one cos it's just podgy & old, one cos if I give it anything else it craps for England & the latest one cos I wanted to improve her condition & give her extra to make up for the lack of decent food for 9mths.

Gluten is a big cause of problems. Sal was itching like crazy for a fortnight after week caught her & it's only now i've realised it's probably the hay she was bedding down on before she moved into the house. Once you've cracked the problem you should see a rapid change & fur growning back

Great, thanks for that.

Is your pup ok now?

Yes, thank you. She rules the world (well, her world!). Fur fine, skin fine. When prone to scratching, she gets done for fleas, when she scootches on her bum, she gets done for worms and anal glands.

Treats us like a hotel and spends most of her life outside in the hill hunting bunnies, coming home for meals and a warm fire at night. Obviously deaf (or selective hearing), can imitate a lump of peat from 100yds without moving and is only going in your direction, not because you called and are purple in the face, but because she happened to be going in that direction, anyway!

Bloody Patterdale terriers!
