Male Harris

The Ferret

Recommended Posts

This has been an incredibly hard decision for me to make and as such I have been in a foul mood for the last couple of months or so. Rosie, I’m sorry. X

After 16 years, I have decided that I am giving up Falconry to concentrate on ferreting and dog work. I hope in the future I will take up another bird, however at the moment, I don’t have the time or if I’m brutally honest, the inclination to hunt my Harris. I’m not being fair to him.

I am therefore looking for a new home for my Male Harris. He is a 2002 bird who hunts at 1lb 7¾ oz. He has been taking rabbit and pheasant regularly since I’ve had him. He has been broken to my ferrets (albino’s and poleys) and although he is steady with them, as with all birds I wouldn’t trust him 100%.

He works with my 5 year old Brittany bitch and has learned that she finds more game than I do and therefore it’s best to stick with her in the field! I have never flown him at field meets as clubs aren’t my thing and therefore I can’t say how he would cope in such a situation as he primarily hunts alone with me and very occasionally with Rosie in tow.

He has met other dogs in the past and initially does the ‘I hate all dogs’ typical Harris thing, however he soon tolerates them.

I am looking for £250.00 for him (Non-negotiable!) and want him to go to someone who has worked birds and will continue to work him, as he is an excellent hunter who is learning all the time.

I will be keeping my equipment as 1). I can’t bear to part with it all and 2). In many years time, I may hunt another bird. I will let him go with IBR paperwork, new anklets, jesses, swivel and leash. And the rats and mice in my freezer.

It makes me very sad to have to make this decision, but it is one that I have made with the welfare of the bird front and foremost. He comes first.

I am contactable by Private Message, by e-mail pm479@btinternet.com and by mobile 07976 714 619 (though please don’t call between 0700 and 1930 hrs Mon and Tue this week as I’m working late).

Be prepared for a grilling as I will make sure that he goes to a good working home.

Cheers for your time

Paul
