My pup gets along great with my dogs, but as we found out today he’s protective of me when encountering another dog that’s not expected. So, how much do you all get your dogs around other dogs? I know us yanks do things a bit different with barn hunting and using two dogs at once with some regularity so I just want my dog to be ok with others

We also use terriers here for multiple jobs.My bitch is jealous when hunting anything so can only work alone,my dog is happy working with any dog but not other people. Both are c'nts with one tracked minds, theres no changing them.I wouldn't part with them for quids. The only time they work well together is when large snakes enter the yard.

All my dogs roll over in submission when meeting strange dogs...... If that dog tries it on then they all join in the fracus lol. My dogs in the past couldn't be trusted..... They had a habit of locking on to each other and not making a sound.... Thankfully those days are long behind me?early socialisation in as many different situations is the key, ratting in a pack as young pups teaches them not to get jealous of other dogs imo, nothing worse than having dogs coupled together at a dig and they start fighting ?I only keep bitches as a rule and 1 dog in my yard at a time?

When my lurcher bitch is in the yard she’s a right f****r to any dog she doesn’t know or human for that matter but off the yard out and about hunting Iv seen her being chased my Yorkshire terriers and all sorts also If she’s in a kennel and another dog she doesn’t know approaches her she loses her shit , all my terriers are chilled out when at home even when just walking about they do chase the lurcher pup around like idiots but that’s just playing

I take my pups out and about with the kids to the park etc, the pub, gamefairs and I've even had them at car boot sales just to get them used to different things. Some dogsare just wired up wrong though.

I assume the little guy reacted as he did because he was startled. He gets taken out to parks etc multiple days of the week and loves people. I’m just sort of realizing he hasn’t interacted much with dogs except for those we own and a friends. Going to have make a bit more of a point to do so

I know of plenty of dogs that never see another person or another dog when exercised and they’re very well mannered then there’s the dog that’s born dog aggressive and you can show them as many dogs in parks he’ll still want to get stuck in. What did he actually do if you don’t mind me asking?

No dog is hard wired to accept strange dogs: it's a pack thing. I doubt that your pup is being protective of you, more that he's unsure how to deal with meeting strange dogs, so probably stands in front of you (you're the safe place, the known, you've got his back, so to speak) using you as the big strong being to boost his courage. The only way we can get some dogs to feel comfortable around strange dogs is by careful socialisation, which doesn't mean throwing everything and everyone at the pup when it can't get away: too much stimulus at the wrong time in a pup's development can turn it into a nervous/aggressive wreck.

I generally find that once my young dogs know what they're doing regards hunting, they'll accept any other dog that is hunting alongside them, which doesn't mean to say that they'll accept a strange dog trying to muscle in on their catch. Dogs are very like people, they have tribes, close family within that tribe. My own dogs know another tribe just up the road who they hunt with every now and again: when they meet it's like a big meet and greet fiesta for a few moments, then they settle down to work. Other times someone's pet joins in on a hunt, usually a terrier of sorts, and my dogs barely give it a second glance: it's become an honorary pack member for the short time it is there.

fair point that, all dogs are different , my 2 are good with strange dogs , my  big younger dog , never starts on any dog infact most try to start on him, my old  dog ok with them if they dont start ,  if they do he up for a scrap . but ive always  been the boss of my dogs  and they know that, they dont step out of line .  our bull breeds staff, pit , bullmastiffs  were ok  , but we always kept them on leads when strange dogs were about, better safe than sorry .

That’s basically what happened however I do feel setting played a role as well,  this I think because when he’s met the friends dogs he’s had no issue. With them he goes in, sniffs, and they’re done really.

This situation (with regards to this post) worked out great IMO because while my dog got worked up the other was bored basically. It didn’t pay much mind to the little dog barking at it chest all puffed out

This is a major problem I have, my dogs get on fine together, but strange dogs they do not like, my old bitch got attacked twice when younger, now she doesn't wait, any dog comes near and it's getting both barrels from her, it can be quite embarrassing at times, I have a younger one who loves all dogs, but as soon as she lets rip he is on it as well, they team up in a blink of an eye.

My dogs are all guard dog types, (but they all work gun and field) and that's what I use them for, it's their life, so I have to accept it as part and parcel of what I have them for.

once they get to know other dogs then they are perfect, it's just the very first point of contact.

They are like it with people as well when in the yard, but away from home they are so friendly, it's amazing to see the character switch from one place to another.

Personally I stay away from other people and there dogs as I know my dogs are all ok but others arnt my lurcher has been had a few times now before I've stuck a size 12 boot up the other dogs ass so I stay clear now. Had a bullx which was a nightmare had to walk him at odd hours to avoid people because he was not a steady dog would go after people if they was jogging aswell. He was really friendly with 2 dogs one being my mum's old bearded Collie and the other my friends lurcher other then that I had to keep him on a lead as I never new what he would do.

Had a mastiff cross killed years ago.The Russells have killed plenty and are really good at it, working together. The antivenine is$1000 oz dollars. The important thing is never disturb a dog killing a snake as to distract its attention. The bad thing is once dogs become snake killers their days are numbered. Some people keep terriers here just for snake protection.
