Best Ferreting Morning So Far

As I've said before, last season was my first season working the ferrets and I had a mixed bag, didn't get many as I didn't really no what I was doing, I wasn't doing the nets right and I was to inpatient at times, I let the ferrets down. So over the summer I've been doing my homework. Sunday morning I went of to a fram I tried to ferret last year lol. I see the farmer and he put me in the direction of where he has see the most rabbits lately which is one of the warrens I've tried to do before, so I got there there and instead of going like a bull in a china shop I took my time netted all 15 holes sorted the ferrets out and had 7 , I was like a kid at Christmas. Then went to the next warren and had 5.

Good to know im not the only one new to ferreting. Im going to start for the first time in a few weeks. I'll be doing it without a dog tho so finding warrens will require a keen eye I think

Doing better then me be out twice and only managed 3 and miss 1 each time but that is life can't catch them all need all the over growth died down

If you don't have a dog you'll need a buddy. Ferreting hedgerows is murder on your own, I guarantee most of the rabbits you net will be on the opposite side of the hedge to you..lol

If your ferrets are young and haven't done much don't expect a lot the first few outings, it takes a while for them to learn the job and they often miss a few, especially if the warrens are big.

Don't forget to turn the locator collars on before you enter the ferrets, I've done that loads of times over the years.

Don't be too eager to dig when you get a mark, give it a couple of minutes because often the rabbit will drag itself a couple of feet further.

Count the nets as you put them out, it's surprising how you can miss even brightly coloured ones.

If you dig a rabbit in a blind run, check that there isn't another in front of it, there often is.

Take something with you to cut the undergrowth, I bought myself a folding scythe thing off ebay for under a tenner and it's really useful for clearing holes.

I'm sure there are loads more but the best advice I can give is beg steal or borrow a dog, it doesn't have to be a hunting type, any dog will do as long as it's safe with ferrets. Dogs will mark holes, nip through hedges, hear whats going on underground, and let you know if the ferret pops up somewhere you cant see.

Some of the best ferreting iv had was when I first started out, a few nets a pug and a whippet, my advice get a small lurcher, whippet, or a bedlington terrier or a x of above. Dog can do the work of several men around a Warren. Just enjoy your ferreting we all make mistakes and we all have blank days. Some good folk on here with sound advice, Im of out tomorrow, hope I do as well as you. Atb j
