Running A Pup- How Much Is Too Much?

Recommended Posts

reyt lads new to owning a lurcher and aFter reading on here. its worrying me that shes doing too much. (probs being silly like)

other day i was out in park just a steady walk with both dogs oFF lead (got a terrier as well) and the terrier spotted a bunny and bolted, pup chased the terrier but then clocked the bunny and ran it. probably went on about 40 metres maybe a little more.

she gets walked twice a day probably totaling an hour more on some days and she also gets a bit oF retrieving practice and some recall work a day.

. they dont go too mental on the walks apart From a section there and back o' the walk where they both tear aFter each other play Fighting and chasing. shes just grown taller that the terrier but quite a bit quicker now.

i very very rarely see her panting too hard or walking with front and back legs at the same time but when i touch her heart it does sometimes seem a bit Fast.

shes still only 17weeks btw.

im not looking to train a super dog, just a pet that gets some sport.

i just dont know how much is too much and reading about working them too hard as a pup messes them up later in liFe got me worried.

apart From that i think everythings going ok. only thing is i want her to experience the game and know what its about without it being too much? i was thinking squirrels, the terrier will tree them and pressure them sometimes enough so they Fall From the tree usually just chases them a bit on the ground and chasing them tree to tree which i can keep up with them seems like a good idea to get her drive up but not going Flat out on bunnies.

Your doin fine pal. Start lamping with her now BUT only let her run the first rabbit of the night. For the remainder of the night you must carry her in your arms whilst you chase the rabbits,That way you`ll keep her keen without spoiling her.Do this for the first 18 months.

Thers always one haaa

Look it’s not going too do much harm to the pup to let it run around like a nutter every day but some on here would say differently, end of day its a pup just let it be a pup and have fun and at the same time get some training in to it like you said with retrieving Get a good bond with it now it’s harder to work together when ether one of you are stubborn besides it’s going too trust your judgment as you will hers

Good luck fella

cheers lads,

it wasnt so much letting the pup be a pup i was worried about

it was more when shes dicking about with terrier she goes mental Flat out

, then literally over one gate and she was on the rabbit hah

ill just have to make sure iF she does come across one thats her only one then.

i cant believe how much shes come along already, i wasnt thinking oF even starting any training yet but the amount oF commands and tricks shes learnt just From watching and copying my other dog is amazing.

Last thing u want is a 17week pup grabbing a squirrel.. It will bite the f****r hard lol I'd just get the dog out alone aswell put some training in, basic three really, retrieve, stock and recall.

Enjoy the pup. Personally I try not to show mine anything until 12 months and then only few runs etc. But others go out from 6 months and give them runs etc... Few go wrong, few keep it up. It's entirely the risk u take yourself.

Good luck

cheers lads,

i dont want it to actually catch a squirrel lol i just wanted pup to see it and chase it but 'cos its a squirrel not a rabbit and climbing from tree to tree its a very slow chase without knackering the dog out but still having fun chasing quarry.

tbh i just wanted reassurance that the odd run isnt going to mess her up later on.

but she is very fit and never tire her out too much.

i used to take the terrier on one really long walk but iv started doing 2 shorter ones so it isnt too much for the pup
