Saluqis in the right hands are just running dogs I've seen wilder X's in the wrong hands it IS NOT about breeding it's about the man behind the dog and please don't feed the Antis with they all rob bollocks

another thread gone west, we work dogs because we like it, so chill out and enjoy what you have it will seem so much better, when my cockers f**k up I don't get excited I just get on, my dogs and me are as good as some and better than most, but I don't take myself to seriously these days, its so much better that way.

Good posts Casso n two crows? salukis are just dogs/lurchers , we over complicate it ourselves some want them too be top hare coursing dogs , some want them too behave like collies , most buy expecting problems , why bother in the first instance ? If you want. 3/3 hare killing dog go buy one, facts n history tell you which breed will excel here and is less chew too own n higher chance if success , if you want a lamper poacher obidient style dog go and get a collie X, fox dog Wheaton or bull X, the only real reason too get a pure us cos you want too hare course , lamp , mooch try different quarry with a pure then it's likely you will enjoy owning one

 

Handling wise I see little or no difference too either my coursing dogs or my Springer all fed trained n exercised the same way , although I do conceed I might have it easy as they like a pack and young seem too learn from the old weather it's jumping manners recall chasing Killing whatever ,reacall was once an issue but little time spent looking into the problem showed it layed at my feet very minor adjustment and job sorted , daily I take six out at a time I rarely use a leash once I'm across the main road , plenty livestock never had any chew ,

 

For me if you want something enough you will make it work it find excuses for failure , am not in any way saying they perfect dog cos reality is they ain't they just another sort of dog or lurcher

good thread above mate , just out of interest regards the recall prob you had with them, what did you have to different to say your other type dogs ? ive never really had a prob with recall with my dogs , dont get me wrong if Buck on fresh sent or seen his quarry he will piss off , but he keen and i like dog to show keenness , not 1/2 arsed if i am honest . if you want you can pm if you want regards you recall prob you had with these type of dogs .

Its strange the lads I run Salukis with and my own dogs never give problems with recall or returning after a run this is not by luck or by accident ,many folk can keep lurchers not all folk have the skill or temperament to keep salukis.

 

I agree - different types of lurchers have broadly different temperaments that suit owners of different temperaments. Friendly well trained dogs need humans who understand the breed and how to handle them. Best example is the Rottweiler. A properly socialised and looked after Rottweiler is a brilliant family pet. However if someone gets one without really understanding what makes them tick, they are dangerous. Kick a young Rottweiler and you'll get a dog that is always preparing for a kick. Hug a young Rottweiler and you will het a dog that is always waiting for a hug. The skill involved is not massive but the time and temperament to give a dog what it needs can't be underestimated. And some dogs are easier to train others.

 

Salukis are great dogs if the owner has the right temperament. If they don't they end up in the pound or worse. I don't have the right temperament. Everything I have read about them indicates they would drive me mad.

Saluki suit me, they will run all day, then switch off when home and arent running up the walls and driving you mad,  thats if their bred right and bred from good stock. Never had trouble with the type i keep geting them back, would walk to heal, friendly to people who stopped to stroke them, wouldn't like the same strangers coming up to the car or back of the house. Only thing you had to watch out for if they was off the lead was GSD as they all seem to hate them. 

Thing with salukis you cant train them like a collie,  push them and the won't do a thing take it slow and you will have no trouble, they learn as they go from you or your other dogs.

Some of the English type of salukis are hard work. Lot have bad temperaments, you can see it when ther young hiding at the back giving you the collie eye.

I took a desert bred at four with no recall it took me about all of a week to get it fully trained but most would have said it was a typical deaf Saluki

A week to train a 4 year old semi feral saluki to be fully trained?!!! Behave ya f****n self!!!

My old Saluki developed a real bad temperament problem, no matter how much i tried to stop it it just would not listen. Thrashing about on the floor like a banshee, pulling me by the leash all over the place.

 

I thought shooting it in the head would have kept the fcuking thing quiet........
