Terriers Will Be The Death Of Me.

Recommended Posts

I've always found my better workers to be calm, relaxed and easier going...any that were a little to lively, fought with dogs and were a constant nuisance never amounted to much...for me anyway.

Same here. A lot of terriers are nt socialised and trained properly though. I had a conversation with someone recently about bringing up young dogs and it was a nice change to hear someone who put time into pups .

Why do we put ourselves through hell by keeping the little b*****ds ? My daughters away working with horses and has left me minding her bitch , Tanner, with instructions not to dig to her. Tanner ne

It's called character

In Ireland properly conducted terrier work will be trusted terrier men monitoring farms where they have been doing well over 25 years you know these farmers there land and burrows intimately, if its d

They're all different. The terrier I mentioned, Tanner, is my daughters terrier and was reared like a terrier would be by a young girl.

Tanner's 9, my daughter's 20.

And Tanner is very highly strung and will stick to anything including my 25" lurcher. Tanner also works like you'd expect a highly strung terrier to work and is silent in her work, which she's good at.

But she was in the house every day and walked without fail every day by my daughter. She's in my van several times a week and loose in the garden for 5 or 6 hours a day.

I remember one time she went missing and I searched everywhere and didn't know what to tell my daughter.

My daughter was in bed and Tanner was too, hidden under the sheets.

So not every handful of a terrier is a badly reared retarded dog.

And although I do like them to be easily handled and quiet in kennels etc. I would put up with a head case any day of the week over a shy one.

Youngsters who are over zealous IMO are much easier to enter and turn into a reliable worker than the quiet ones who seem to take a step backwards every time they're faced with something new.

I do know there's a big difference between a calm, focused terrier and a shy timid one but sometimes I think lads make excuses for the shy ones because they can make life easier.

When it comes to boisterous terriers and old friend used to say "it's easier to take it out of them than put it into them."

JMHO.

Theres getting the job done quick and proper and always getting the job done..then theres run around a hole for 2 hrs giving the hypnotic bark until they tire the fox out and he falls asleep in a stop and then your terrier finally digging it..i know which 1 id rather keep.

Had a couple of russell's both level headed and sensible dogs. The did the job a treat. Both bayers but never messed about. Also both flexible dogs and great ferreters and would basically tackle any thing they came across above or below. I think the worst issue I had was the male had a grievance with the great dane next door lol but that was it.

back then I kept reading in the books about these hard dogs and thought I was missing some thing so got a black and tan fella. He was a bloody menace fighting every thing but no natural work ethic in him. So I wasn't missing any thing after all

That's a pretty amateurish thing to say I think Stopend. Every animal is different. Some are dumb and will let the dog work away and some know what's coming and won't sit still for any dog until a couple of hours run about.

please enlighten me on the dog side of that and what se said too.I'd love to learn, thanks

Every hunt every dig is different for every terrier and a lot of terriers work differently to others so can't understand some of the posted on here I'd like to hear stopends take on it

Cooneys post I agree with but one thing I hate is a terrier that will fight with anything sure sign of a Baden
