Break In The Weather

Recommended Posts

Noted that Wednesday would be dry up on the Scottish borders, so I decided to pop up to one of my permissions to put in the day. As its an hour and a half drive I try and cram as much into the day as I can so took the 12bore and 22lr plus the three spaniels . Rolled into the yard about 9.30am . now I normally deal with the farm manager but the land owner appeared he came over and we had a bit banter he asked me to go over to his game crop to deal with the rabbits this wasn't in my plan but he's the boss so that had to be my priority . Got the sako out and my home made quad sticks of I go complete waste of time no rabbits plenty of pigeons dropping inn off a sittee tree but at least I followed the bosses orders ;) .

Now back to my plan drove up the edge of the farm moorland and winny bushes on one side trees and crops on the other first bunny on the track out with the sticks first time out with them only trying them out to see if I can get on with them if ok I may buy proper ones anyway found my first design fault with the sticks :icon_redface: I should have cut the stick down to enable me to get onto the scope better as it got in the way of my line of sight and my cheek after a bit of a fumble I got a nice half size bunny head shot and into the bag. Moved on to clear fell and took the young dog out and the 12bore worked him down the clear fell had some good flushes on pheasants about six this geed him up so when he at last flushed some ground game a hare I was pleased he stopped on the flush, thought I was never going to get a shot at owt but as we came to the end of the clear fell and into some nettles the dog bumped out a rabbit missed the bug*er with the first barrel but bowled it over with the second only about twenty yards or so the dog had stopped and marked it well but I didn't let him retrieve it I picked it up dropped it into the game bag with slow motion moves making sure the dog saw me. Heal walked back to the truck good bit of training done :victory: .Moved on to a grass field woods on both sides rabbits not staying around hopping off and out of site looked across to the other side of the field and one bunny sitting out long way of but got the rifle on the sticks steady shot few inches over its head about the tip of it's ears crack head shot best one of the day.Next stop another clear fell get the bitch out, now she is a hundred mile an hour type only one gear full speed ahead pheasants left and right the dog plonking her bum down every time then two leverets and she still stays steady :boogy: . Now a good walk about with the 22 along the side of a very steep ravine covered with winny bushes took two on the steep side they rolled down into the bushes I left them for the old dog to retrieve later. As I walked back towards the truck I stopped to look at the view a fox cub trotted up to about twenty yards from me and stopped stone still and looked me up and down it only moved off when I made a move .Not aloud to shoot foxes on this permission happy with just seeing it.The old dog had a good time collecting the rabbits . Tea time  .Last walk of the day came across a bunny sitting in a gateway sure I hit it but it popped its head up again so shot it again walk over to pick it up and found two  stone dead bunnies .Cleaned the rabbits then the farm manager came along I told him about the pigeons on his game crop so he gave me permission to have a go at them so not a bad result. found out the quad sticks help with the rifle got half a dozen bunnies for the freezer some good dog training and some pigeon shooting permission plus a close encounter with a cub worth the three hour round trip.

Well done hily. Looks like you had a good day with the dogs. With four Westies and a Staff I get all jealous reading about working dogs. Still pondering on teaching my youngest one to fins bunnies. I reckon she could do it cos she's as sharp as a tack.

Good to see the quads worked for you. I went out last night and forgot mine. Had to borrow my buddys trigger sticks and was reminded once more how totally useless I am with em.
