Only ever had one on the Wansbeck in Northumberland or just off the river caught in the rough by best terrier I have owned up to now. Half bred Russell X Lakeland lived till it was 19 years old hunted the whole lot for mice upwards. That's only experience I had.

Haven't seen a mink for sometime here but have had a few good hunts in years past .Most memorable was when just out on exercise and heard a rabbit a squealing other side the brook .Crossed and headed to the spot ,a two holed bury with rabbit still squealing .Dogs frantic digging and me pulling ,wasn't long before we unearthed the rabbit, alive but only just .Bit more trenching and they had her .Same Brook goes under a culvert bottom of our road as it joins a larger river .There is a long shallow by the underpass and walking the dogs there ages ago ,they got excited about something in the wall that holds up a bank above the brook. The wall is made of boulders .Very excited at one spot then another until a mink bolted further down with terriers struggling in the flow to get on it .My old lurcher saved that day picking it up with ease .The fish that once swarmed the brook are now gone ,roach and dace aplenty due to a pollutant few years back so I guess there ain't much to attract a mink .I've dug few mink with the Ytene hounds but every one accounted for by terrier .Ran a few up trees in the dark with no gun .Very sporting animal tbh .

we are plagued with them here in mid wales!! infact just last night me and joe off here were doing some ratting on a carp lake for a fella and one broke cover and made for the island. great fun we used to have hunting the mink with the terriers, was a great way of socialising youngsters.

most the time i found they were not in earths as such but in "root tangles" as we called them. Big balls of roots that erode back into the bank. I preferred a small yappy type, and i know it should go without saying but the dogs used should be well schooled around water, as very often the best way in was for the dog to hit the water and swim under the overhanging bank, in order to presure the mink into heading for the open water. sounds obvious eh!? but a few times lads bought dogs to make a bobbery pack that would not entertain getting there toes wet!

all in all a very adrenaline fuelled pastime

Have had a few over the years and IMO they're brilliant for helping a young terrier get ready for bigger quarry. They can be very aggressive.

But after loosing 6 gamefowl to a small bitch mink 2 weeks ago there will be no more being sporting towards them. The only good mink is a dead mink IMO.

A minks just killed all the chickens. My bitch flushed him from under the shed. I set up a live catch trap. It's the old waiting game now

And he will be back is right so remove all the dead chickens away so that the only bit of food available is the bait in your trap.

They're killing b*****ds and for those who say they go into a pen and get all excited they are talking bullshit because the six I lost were in three different pens and the mink only ate one head.
