GeorgeC 4 Posted June 19, 2017 Report Share Posted June 19, 2017 Evening all. Just looking for a bit of advice regarding my new Border Terrier Bitch. She will first and foremost be a pet, but looking to use her quite regularly for ratting and bushing/beating. Just wondering if had anyone had any advice towards training, food and introduction to the field. Whilst she's a pet I do want to work her and don't want to end up with a soft, fat, unsociable and disobedient dog. Cheers George 1 Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 3,822 Posted June 19, 2017 Report Share Posted June 19, 2017 (edited) Take her everywhere with you,she'll get socialized and trained at the same time.Get a live catch cage trap and give her a rat at 6months,she'll teach you about rats and take her into the field as much as possible,she'll be fit as.Just remember their not sheepdogs so you can't expect that level of obedience as most terriers have their own agenda when hunting.Feed raw game and chicken with the bone in.Good luck with the pup. griffgav 16 Posted June 19, 2017 Report Share Posted June 19, 2017 How old is she mate? I'm quite new to this game, I have a patterdale x border and hoping to do pretty much the same. Predominantly ratting though. Currently waiting for mine to get a bit older before I chuck him in as he is only 4 months. I will let him get involved with the rats at 6 months! Quote Link to post

toolebox 1,384 Posted June 21, 2017 Report Share Posted June 21, 2017 (edited) Time placed into her training early is always repayed ten fold ,the rest is just natural ,shown plenty of game will see her return with her best ,but its not a given that any dog will be a top dog given plenty of work,some dogs are just born natuals and only require a limited amount of training .Terriers can be very hard headed but that doesnt mean they are stupit ,they just require reminding whos in charge a little more often than some other types of dogs . desertdog 149 Posted July 6, 2017 Report Share Posted July 6, 2017 Borders are great,however they take time to come into their own,I have a young dog I bred,he's 2yrs now and starting to take interest,with a bit of what you ask them,they will do it,some lads don't have time for borders,but when they come on,you will know,abt did.
