Aussie Whip 3,827
Going to move to an area over here with large number of fallow deer and heard there going to be declared a pest animal,so would be interested in owning a bigger lurcher.Wondering what cross would be the most suitable for deer single handed. Was thinking of a dane/staghound but don't know if these would be quick enough. arcticgun 4,548
Think you would be better off with a saluki bull greyhound or something along them lies, cant see great Dane fetching much to the table unless Scooby doo is for real 4 Quote Link to post
green dragon 694
I have no expirances with deer but id say any lucher over 25inch should do them fine Edited April 21, 2017 by green dragon 1 Quote Link to post
Dig-deep-draw-charlie 2,707
I owned a 5/8 grey 3/8 bull, he had no bother with deer, he was around 2829 tts. 1 Quote Link to post
trenchfoot 4,243
Whats wrong with using a staghound? I'd have thought the clue was in the name. 7 Quote Link to post
Wild-Bill 500
A decent line bred Bull lurcher should do the trick for ya mate. Get one bred from the right stuff they will have plenty enough pace aswell. I have no experience of them staghounds but I don't see why they wouldn't be bang on for the job. Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,055
I'd advise a fast type of deer/grey or saluki/grey with a touch of bull. If you chase fallow with a lurcher them dog'll be kicked hard now and again and will need to be mentally up for it, hence the touch of bull. Agreeing with Trenchfoot, I believe a lot of lines of stag over there are already bred like this and if I were you I'de be looking for one from those lines. A lot also depends on the terrain you'll hunt and if it's very forested you might be better off with a german wirehaired pointer and a rifle. Coursing mad 24 874
Nice fast type saluki grey with a touch of bull . I deal for em . most lurchers lovecdeer just try and get a strong type if that's ur main quarry . got a very good saluki grey ATM but I think a little bit of bull blood in her would help for taking them regular atb Quote Link to post
Coursing mad 24 874
Strong greyhound would be ideal but but the down side is get injury's regular due too their heavy running style Quote Link to post
WILF 44,285
Find out who else is running dogs in that area and if their dogs are catching then take a pup off one of those people. If the parents are doing it then you have a fair chance with the pup. 2 Quote Link to post
MickC 1,825
What type of ground will you will be running them on and what size Deer your going after ? They use a different array of breeds over there but for rough ground a Deerhound cross covers this type of terrain best. Edited April 21, 2017 by MickC 2 Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 3,827
A 3/4 staghound 1/4 bull might be the go,these types are fairly available here, mainly used for pigs.I thought you might have needed something a bit bigger but sounds like they'd do the job. Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
Saluki or heavily saturated born to run that type of quarry in those tempratures and terrain what more do you need dont reinvent the wheel. ATB Edited April 21, 2017 by desertbred 2 Quote Link to post
Aussie Whip 3,827
Working saluki's are almost unheard of here,I don't know why. Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
They run from Turkey up through the Middle East , Central Asia to China on every game and terrain to many people assume they are purely a sand dog its just a learning curve for some folk.ATB Edited April 21, 2017 by desertbred 4 Quote Link to post
