Yep I been hanging around here like a bad smell but at the age of 43 this is my first ever airgun, my old man can't fathom why as I got shotguns and rimfires why I got one, but it's you guys enthusiasm for it plus something I can do with my kids as they grow up. It's an oil cloth and although you are right it's fecking terrible it keeps the kids and my tinkering off the table top which would not amuse the boss ! I think I will shoot it a bit and see how it goes before I open it up and polish/tinker, I got a bit of practice as it a bit different than a HMR plus get a decent scope sat on it. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654 Posted March 23, 2017 Report Share Posted March 23, 2017 Im the same mate, got shotgun,rimmy, .243 but will always have an air rifle, there will always be a place for them, not to mention the low cost fun aspect, a 77 really is a doddle to strip, it would be well worth you at the very least stripping it and de greasing and re lubing it properly, HW quality control is terrible these days, so a good clean to remove all the factory gunk and possible (quite likely) metal turnings from the inside would pay dividends mate. 1 Quote Link to post
Paulnix 426 Posted March 23, 2017 Author Report Share Posted March 23, 2017 The guy I bought it off never had it open so that's a good idea, he said didn't use it a lot just a bit of plinking in his garage or neighbours land, he sold it on as rarely used it figuring he may get a pistol to play with instead, he never had a scope on it either though I think it came as part of a bundle originally as there was a bipod, hard case and a SMK scope with it. Whats the best thing for removing old grease and cleaning up , would brake cleaner be ok or would that be too much on the internals ? Any particular type of Airgun grease ? Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654 Posted March 23, 2017 Report Share Posted March 23, 2017 Brake cleaner is fine mate, just dont get any on the piston seal, give it a good clean until its spotless, use your 12 bore cleaning rod and wipe the cylinder and inside of the compression tube out, get some moly paste, or red rubber grease to "lightly" lube the spring after de grease and polishing the spring ends (sorry could not help myself) some muc off dri slide for the piston and some pure silicon oil for the piston seal, just around the edges mate, that will sort her out 1 Quote Link to post

H&N FIELD TARGET TROPHY is a great pellet to start with. They seem to suit HW spring rifle barrels perfectly. Headsize is an important factor in precision accuracy. My HW77 loves H&N FTTs in 5.53mm headsize. So does my HW80 .22 FAC rifle. With these I can zero pellet on pellet out to 35 metres and use a little hold-under for closer range headshots. Just an inch holdoever and I can hit confidently out to 50 metres and that's with my sub-12 ft/lbs HW77. My HW80 only needs a fractional adjustment for absolute reliable and predictable range accuracy. If there's nothing wrong with the gun, don't go looking to fix something. These are very well made, self-contained air rifles and the accuracy potential of the '77 is legendary. It may well benefit from a nice fettle and polish up of the internals but, that's all mine has ever had. Fantastic rifle. As Mac' said earlier, I too have opted to fit my HW97 sporter stock to my '77 and the handling and ballance is incredibly sweet. Conversely, I have retro-fitted my "Macstock" HW77 stock to my HW97 and that too has been an equally amazing transformation. So they are both staying put!
