Phil Lloyd 10,736
You are right TOMO... Big , massive, well populated warrens seem to, call a man in... They are like the lights of smugglers, hooked of a purpose onto dangerous rocks, luring an unwary ship onto them... Edited March 4, 2017 by Phil Lloyd 2 Quote Link to post
C.green 3,203
Good post phil leave them huge warrens as safe breeding places to fill up the smaller easier warrens as you say takes a while for the penny to drop but deffo the way forward ?? Quote Link to post
Sirblessed 2,511
Iv'e seen a whole hillside as a warren, hundreds of holes, you might bolt some, but you couldn't net and dogs are useless as rabbits just keep dropping back down the myriad of holes.Plus you'd be lucky to ever see the ferrets again.I wouldn't attempt it no matter how many ferrets, men, dogs.I just saw show saying the virus will kill 20%of rabbits(if you believe that). In a way with lower numbers they'll become more difficult to find and hunt, leaving only the keenest rabbiters bothering to hunt them. But I wouldn't under estimate the rabbit not to bounce back. , Same here in nsw in some areas, but numbers fluctuate year to year.Existing diseases seem to control numbers in most areas.Don't think new viruses are needed. If rabbits numbers are reduced too much the wildlife and farm stock are going to suffer from increased fox and feral cat predation. The farmers know this as have been asked to kill any foxes seen if given permission to hunt rabbits on their place. Those giant warrens are almost impossible to ferret in my experience even though they look promissing. Its not like it was 30 years ago,use to bring home 300 plus rabbits for a weekend.now lucky to get 20-30 in a weekend. This new virus sounds like another cane toad experiment. You just need enough ferrets and people they will bolt np yep done a few places like that ,,hole hillsides covered in holes,,many hundreds,,if not a thousand,,they can be done,,you just have to keep mooving along,,, one spot we do on our permision,,next to a track we just use dogs,,,great sport,,yes we miss a good few,,,but still catch good numbers off it everytime we do it...weve done it a few times this season getting the numbers down,,,as folk drive down this track, and it atracts poachers hitting our land they tend not to do this hillside as its a bit daunting,,,but the fields surrrounding it.. Nothing I like better than watching the dogs run Quote Link to post

garbs 90
i agree with sir most times one or two well trained seasoned hunting ferrets will clear numbers of rabbits evan in mega warrens and its just a matter of hitting your chosen site and working it well. comes down to how good your ferrets are and how good they work for you.the only down side my way is when buying ferrets from reputable breeders talking up how good there ferrets are and all you end up with is duds but you cant win em all.
