Coughing Ferret

One of my hobs seem to be coughing any one know what it could be ?

Only noticed it today whilst playing with them if it continues I will take them to the vets

Something stuck in the oesophagus or a chest infection. If it isnt too bad i would give him a day to see if it clears on its own, as it could be food and probably will clear itself. If it doesnt clear i would be heading for the vets.

As rabbit demon said I have had several ferrets get small pieces of bones stuck in there throats or back of there mouth have a careful look if he keeps coughing.

There fed on chudleys ferret food, and get plenty of raw rabbits/pigeons/day old chicks and mice all sorts really

I think it may be there bedding use hay and sawdust however the hay seemed a bit dusty when I put it in although is said dust extracted

Potentially that I'll keep and eye on him and if it continues it will be off to vets

Could be the fluff off the chicks that's know to irate the mucus in there throat , just my view but I wouldn't feed them or dry if you have plenty raw food mate

Pets at home sell a product by 'Beaphar'. Its a 'multi-vitamin/malt paste'. Ferrets can't cough up hairballs/fur/feathers like cats for example. So this is a first defence against any sort of wheezing /coughing for me and it has good results. It claims to coat internal hair with a slippery layer. Only need a tiny amount on a finger tip a few times a week. They really like it too, so great for training a "come" command.

Larger amounts can also work as a laxative so best not to use too much... unless you want them to really pass something urgently, really best to consult a vet here though.

Obviously if it seems more extreme and/or this doesn't work - its a vet job.

Its Multi- Vitamin Malt Paste I use it seems to keep a nice coat on them as well as anti-hairball.

While they can't cough up fur balls they are able to pass them out I'm feeding mine on bird carcasses after the breasts are removed and there's scats seem to be pure feathers
