Back To School With The Profesor Of The Stock

Recommended Posts

I've only just got chance to put a post up about my baptism to the love of the wooden stock last night.

After am event full, what should have been 25 minute journey turned into 1.5 hrs I was warmly welcomed into Jimmy's house were I met his lovely wife Niki and had a brew before I was taken to school!

I honestly didn't realis there was so much you could do to change the colour, effect and shape of a wooden stock!

Jimmy started off by stripping down my 100KT to the stock and then started the process of removing the original oil, I really didn't realise how much difference a little wire wool and elbow grease in the right hands could alter the look of the stock, virtually immediatly. The words "this is the bit I told you, you wouldn't like" were said and the next minute me stock was in the bath! The soaking process released the old oils and also cleaned the remaining wire wool from all the nooks and crannies of the stock. The next part of the process was using one of Niki's towels to dry the water off, apparently this is the part Niki was unaware of LOL. Once the dry Jimmy then began the process of readding warm oil back into the wood, the effect was immediate and absolutely stunning! I couldn't believe how much the grain stood out, the tiger stripes looked amazing.

Next step in the process was waiting for stock to dry, my further education for the evening was looking at the difference lamp light and effective distance, I'm sure with a bit more effort we could of found at least one lady undressing in a window? I also had time to look at the number of guns my teacher had owned and also worked on, the collection was astounding.

It was then time for a quick lesson on buffing and reapplication so I could get home before 2300hrs, we were going to pop over and see Sean but it was far to late due to my nightmare trip up.

I had a great evening with you both and learnt so much it was unbelievable, I can't thank you enough mate, it was a real treat watching a craftsman at work. I know you've been told this before but I don't mind been repatative, you've got a calling Jimmy and it's certainly not what you're current business is, you've got a real talent for working with wood and are passionate about it I hope one day in the future you get the opportunity to turn it into a business.

Cheers Jimmy :thumbs::thumbs::toast:

By the way the trip back was epic! The A19 South was closed so was diverted round Newcastle were I was diverted twice more???
