I do 95% of my driving on road but this thing does see some serious off road as well. Road handling, performance, economy etc, etc on road is brilliant but.......off road its a complete %^&&^**$^%!!!!! I have sunk the thing twice having to be towed out of floorpan deep mud and on Sunday I nearly lost it again, I wondered into a field following a tractors tracks (they had not even churned up the grass) and even in 4lock you would not believe how pleased I was to get out alive! Now....... What Car, Drive, even Jeremy Clarkson thinks this beastie is excellent off road (so does my Nissan Dealer, but then again he would) and the truth is I think they are probably right. So..as everyone keeps telling me I need to look at the boots. It still has the original new tyres on it 215 65 16 Bridgestone Dueler! I make no bones these are excellent on road but.......I need a 75%road 25%off road or at worst a 50/50. Bear in mind most of my motoring is on road and I don't want to sacrifice to much road handling, but the thing is becoming an embarrasment off road. IanB 0 Posted December 3, 2007 Report Share Posted December 3, 2007 If you have road tyres on it doesn't matter what your driving your going to get stuck if you travel off the beaten path, your treads will just block up with mud...I'd go for at least 50/50 terrain if you go off road regular....but I wouldn't beat yourself up about the x-trail it will go most places as will other 4x4's with the right treads on...Get some BF AT's there good on and off road, and can clock up some high miles.. Absolutely Ian, thats exactly what happened on Sunday, the ground looked hard and flat and green but within seconds the tyres were like slicks and all sign of the tread was gone! I'm a bit new to this Off Road tyre business, what sort of effect are these 50/50 likely to have on the road performance, noise, grip, ride comfort, tyre life etc? IanB 0 Posted December 4, 2007 Report Share Posted December 4, 2007 The BF AT's are pretty good mate for on and off road, take the plunge and buy them , you can get cheaper tyres but they will wear quicker especially the remoulds obviously, the general grabber AT2 are meant to be reasonable, their a bit cheaper I'm not sure if they will last as long as the BF's though... I picked some ATR's up a few weeks back and its made a huge difference compared to the road tyres that was on the Motor previouse. I did a bit of homework and to be Honest the BF's was top of the pile but wouldn't do much for my bank balance. the best bargain I got and I must admit I'm well pleased with them was Cooper ATR's, they're american and come with a good track record, there's alot of info about them on the net. I picked mine up for £56 delivered and then got them fitted and balanced for a further £20,. the website below has some Info on them and this is the number of the wholesalers I picked the tyres up from... Tyres (factory fitted) that I have at the moment are 215 65 16 Bridgestone Dueler.
