Best Gun Dog?

Recommended Posts

i never thought of that, what kind of cost would you be looking at for a dog that is already trained or would it be cheaper to get a dog and send it away to be trained, on the other hand i would like the challenge of trainging a dog up. :wallbash: i dont know what to do he he he

There'll be plenty of young dogs out there now which have been trained for trialing and wont quite make the grade, they will be superb gun dogs all the same, and you can expect to pay up to £600 for one, but you can pay a dam site more than that for a pup out of top dogs. I paid £500 for mine last year 18mths old fully trained and able to have end of a season with him. Pups take a lot of time and paitience before it pays off and like i said i learnt more from my dog than it learnt from me. Now i can take on a pup and still have this season and next with my trained dog. Then hopefully have two working dogs in 2009

What ever you decide best of luck

I'll agree with Nicola and say that general socialisation is good for your pup. I don't like people trying to take liberties with my dog, making too much of a fuss of it etc. You want the dog to look at you as the source of the most fun and comfort, this is especially true of cockers I've found.

My wife and kids have just one simple command to give, thats "sit". Everything else is up to me, I don't want them giving the dog retrieves or anything like it, just play away and use that one simple, but all important command. To that end they give the sit command in the same manner as I do.

quite surprised macnas has not already said this but get yourself edward martins cocker spaniel training masterclass box set on video or dvd they are really useful and will be a great help to you as a first time trainer .you will be able to keep refering back to bits all through your dogs training.i have cockers and springers and to be honest i prefer shooting over and beating with cockers but they can be difficult!they are characters .by the way it costs roughly 60 quid a week to send a dog to be trained and they have i for about 13 weeks i think.good luck and if you need help post another topic :drink:

As Dogga pointed out, I use Ed Martins DVD's to help me train my cocker. They are invaluable to me, and I would have suggeted you get them, but was cognicent of the fact that you're watching your money.

If you can afford them, get them.

ok i have decided on getting a cocker. So what kind of things shall i be doing with the dog for the first couple of months. I have never owned a dog before so not sure on what i should do with it etc etc, The dog will be living outside in a kennel.

if your getting it at 8 week old then bond with ,play with it ,generally get it thinking you are the best thing since sliced bread and it will work wonders for you later as it wants to!let it be a pup and enjoy itself .get yourself the edward martin dvds as they are spot on and will help you no end.if you have a video recorder then the vids are cheaper.if your interested then ill sell my 4 if i can find them.check out these kennels on ebay .same as mine and very well priced item number 120192805310 (you will have to copy and paste as i dont know how to put the link up)
