Right STEP ONE, you take the but pad off and the crown on the pistol grip(if it has one fitted ) place the pad where you can easily get it as if you need to sand the stock you will need to fit this back on so when your sanding you do not go lower than the pad as the pad will not fit the stock properly when placed back on ,

you need to keep the wood at the same level as the pad .

once this is done and every thing is removed then cover the hole stock with nitro mors and wrap in cling film and leave to stand for an hour or so.

Will put up step two when iv taking off the cling film

Didn't think of using cling film.

What nitromors do you use?

The cling film is a very good tip i got off Leeview a member off here and it works well

the one i have been using is the green gel one super strength one but LV has given me the name another type

to use but ill have to go back into my pm,s to get the name of it ,

Step 2,,,

Take the cling film off you will see where the lacquer has stuck to the film .

Some lacquer will still be on the stock but will have softened so get a blunt knife but use the top edge of the knife not the sharpened end as this may dig in and you will take a big slice out of the wood

place the knife on the stock and scrape along all was following the grain and don't put a lot of pressure on the knife just enough to take the lacquer off .

Once you have done this you will need to fill a bucket with warm water and washing up liquid

get an old sponge and wash the stock over a few times to get rid of the nitro that is left on the stock

then stick her under a hose and wash the remaining soap suds off or a tap

once this is done and all the nitro is off let her stand until dry

Step3 ,,,

Once she has dry,d the sanding will begin give it a sanding down lightly mind at first only applying a little pressure at first to see how it go,s if it dose not take the stain out then apply a little more pressure until it dose come out op use a ruffer sand paper but if you do the smoothing out prose's will take longer as the ruff paper will leave scratches and these will need to be removed ,

If there not to deep then 800 wet and dry used with soapy water will eventually remove them ,but i do the hole stock with 800 wet and dry any way .

Then move to 1200 grit and repeat the prose's after the 1200 i use the 1000 grit and smooth out again wash off after each coat with an old tea towel soaked in water to remove any residue left off the smoothing out with wet and dry .

The smoothing out takes the time but just depends on how good a Finnish you want .

Step 4 ,,,

once she is all smoothed out with the wet and dry give her a rub all over with the 0000 wire wool then get rid of the bits of wire wool the wool leaves behind (rub her over with a damp cloth )

once she dry,s witch should not take long .

Then get your stain and put the first coat on (use a lint free cloth for this ) ,,,let it dry and put the second coat on now when this dry,s give her another rub over with the wool and start to build your coats up as you go giving the stock a rub over with the wool in-between coats

All ways remember to give it a little rub over with a damp lint free cloth to get rid of the wire dust

apply the stain as you see fit ,,,how dark or light you want your stock to be ,

Now iv been on all day with this and usually it takes a lot longer to get to this stage some times days but this rifle stock did not need much sanding so i was lucky lol

but now she will be left to dry until tomorrow night .
