keep your townie muts on the lead is the answer, and as for you finding the pigs ill wager if you go there every weekend for the next 2 years you wont see one you may get to hear them but you wont see them!!

The thing is that my dogs do like hunting anything that moves, and i just read somewhere on the internet that a couple of dogs have no chance against a pack of wild boar, and my two dogs are guaranteed to get involved.

I used to do the New Forest, but have given up on that because there are just too many ponies, so i've decided to try the Forest of Dean.

Is this a wind up? You say "my dogs like hunting anything that moves" then later on that you had to give up going to the New Forest as there are too many ponies!!! Does that mean they were hunting the ponies too??

How about TRAINING YOUR DOGS????? Or better still, keep them on a lead if they are that disobedient! If I have misinterpreted your words I apologise, but it's got me worried that you are out walking with 2 completely out of control dogs who are likely to kill or be killed either by a kick from a horse or an irate farmer.

Anyway: where do you live? you must drive a long way to one of the two as the New Forest and the Forest of Dean are not exactly next door to each other!

No they dont hunt ponies, because they are at heal, until the ponies go away. The thing is that I want somewhere where they can have a bit of freedom, as one of my dogs is a retired military working dog, and for that reason Dartmoor would not be suitable. Camping out is not a problem because I do not pitch a tent, its more a matter to taking a backpack with supplies and building shelter.

You tell em Rog

You have no idea what a trained working shepherd does, obviously. In a military environment they go into an area before the soldiers to sniff out explosives. Think.

if your dogs hunt anything and you had to give up the new forest due to ponies what are you going to do about the freeroaming sheep,im in the woods alot still not come into any boar plenty of deer an squirrels,oh and you cant camp anywhere theres set sites but to be honest youd be better off finding somewhere else to f**k around, cus the last thing the forest needs is a tosser like you rampaging around. :boxing:

The forest is for everyone, not just you, tosser, so get used to it. My question was about wild boar and the safety of my dogs. Free roaming sheep are not a problem for us.

you did state that your dogs like to hunt anything.?if you were aware of the law its illegal to hunt with a bow in this country .also theres a lot of jumpy people up here including stock owners, the owners of free roaming sheep are called sheep badgers a lot carry guns in their cars when they do the rounds and when i moved here 4 yrs ago i was warned of which ones shoot unleashed dogs nr their stock and ask questions later.it was also not that long ago a guy tried living wild nr cinderford shooting rabbits with an airrifle he was caught and charged, just a few pointers of local knowledge to help you.

also just a observation u said both dogs love to hunt any thing. but u would be breaking the law as 2 dogs are not allowed are they only rats and rabbits and if there,s a shoot in the forest the keepers are going to love u chasing all there birds al;l over the place stick to the parks in the city if u can keep them at heel there shouldn,t be a problem also foot paths were originaly for workers in the olden times to get to there destinations of work and dogs should not be let of i read some where they must be kept on a lead and it be no longer than 2 metre,s i think some one may correct me if im wrong and i will appolagise

chris,

sounds like the boar are the least of your worries. i wouldn't expect you to meet any boar and certainly wouldn't expect these dogs A) to engage boar B ) be attacked by boar.

control of your dogs in proximity of free-roaming stock would be my first concern. unfortunately too many irresponsible people have made it necessary to institute laws concerning dogs on bands these days.

cheers,

i think this about sums it up spot on allgame, as for retired military dog well! i done 4 tours with 321 EOD in Ireland and we never had any dog with us just a lot of armour and a weelbarrow.

worse job in the world = picking up body parts in belfast bus station guess we were to late for that one.

good god ya'll are a mite touchy i don't know anything about ya'll but i do know i've never seen a hog that could catch a dog that didn't want caught same goes for a ponie and generaly a good knife usually stops a hog if your dogs got a real hold on it and if those dogs have much hunt in them they must handle a little or they wouldn't be riding home
