.22Lr Semi Auto Rifle Options With 6 Shot Magazine?

Recommended Posts

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction -

I've been a member of our local rifle club for three months and am looking to get my first .22 rifle. I'd like to use it for rabbits, permission pending, but more often for practising precision and timed target shooting at the range, and for this it needs a 6 round magazine minimum.

All I can find on my internet window shopping sprees so far are the Ruger 10/22 (same as the club's gun I'm using at the moment) and tactical looking semi-autos which I'm not really that fond of as I prefer more traditional looking guns. After something with a bit of quality for 'the journey' with a six round magazine or more.

I'd be very interested to hear any recommendations for rifles I should be checking out.

Cheers

CZ452/455s are bolt action and come with 5 or 10 round mags. Don't know how good they'd be for precision shooting, but are plenty good enough for field work. Pretty indestructible too.

Ruger 10/22s are very good in as far as you can get loads of aftermarket stuff to make then as you please.

Thanks Walshie; the CZ's look nice and solid, checked out a video on YouTube. Just reckon that bolt action would hinder me in getting two shots off on a two second target exposure. Mind you the under lever guys do it...do you think a bolt action would be quick enough, if I was? Is it likely to damage the mechanism working it that quickly?

Won't damage anything, but for what you're talking about a semi-auto sounds a better option. Note: Semis are a nuisance when out shooting in the field as they eject cases all over the place.

It's all down to personal preference, but for a bolt action I'd go CZ and for semi I'd go Ruger with a few trick bits on. Trigger, bolt release, etc.

Anschutz 525 is a quality piece, and has a 10 mag as standard.

I bought a new one years ago & had it for 6 or 7 years, but like most semi's it gunged up and then

misfired if it wasn't cleaned relentlessly, also subsonic's were worse than HV for reliable cycling

particularly after 30+ rounds.

HV were much better, but way too noisy, anyway changed to bolt guns and stayed there!

Also the Anny plus a moderator and an uncut barrel was like Davy Crocketts musket.

Hi Dodger, A Magtech 7022, or Mossberg 702 (same rifle) will fit the bill for short range targets and pest control. I have had mine for several years. It has ten shot mags, recycles Eley and RWS subs all day, is lightweight, about 5 lbs with a scope and accurate to 60 yards. I clean mine out every 200 rounds. It takes minutes to strip for cleaning, a couple of screws and pins removes the action. This was one of my outings this autumn shooting rabbits. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/pest-control-magtech-22-semi-auto-makes-up-for-lost-time/

Bolt actions are often said to be more accurate than semi-auto, so if you're target shooting you might want to consider that.

Personally, I'd worry less about what magazine a gun comes with, than what accessory magazine you can buy to fit, as often guns come with small capacity mags as standard with larger capacity available as accessories.

My advice would therefore be to look at guns with a reputation for high accuracy and see what magazines are available as accessories, and whether or not those magazines have a reputation for reliability when used with the gun in question.

In all honesty for precision target shooting you probably want a dedicated target rifle.

I'm not following why a semi?

I have the Magtech 7022 and it is the cheapest you are likely to find, as Kenj has said they are very light and a great general purpose rifle, and I love mine for what it does BUT....nobody in their right mind buys ANY semi for precision target work at the range.

Whilst mine is still remarkably and impressively accurate for what it is, my CZ452 B.A. Silhouette will edge it every time, and a target rifle will easily beat my 452.

Best I've done with my 7022 was 10 shots in 1.8 seconds at 100yards, they all went in the black, and witnessed by 10-12 people. It was the first time (I think the only time) I've ever taken it to Bisley. Everyone had a go and it is a great fun way to get through a lot of ammo very quickly. But that isn't field work, you don't get 10 bunnies sitting in exactly the same place and not moving whilst you simply hang on to the rifle as tight as you can and go for it.

Well I have the CZ 511 semi auto, it is an amazingly accurate rifle, with Eley subs, I will put it against any,and I mean any, bolt action sporting rifle, off the shelf, you will not go wrong with a 511 or indeed the new model the 512, Ruger 10/22 are a decent rifle, but the trigger is just appalling in standard form, it is worse than some kids cap guns, mega heavy with a mile of creep,of course it can be improved, and the 10/22 has a whole industry built around it, selling the most exotic tuning bits you could imagine, but if you dont want to spend fortunes, on tuning bits or custom rifles, a CZ 511 or 512 with 8 shot mag, will bring home the bacon, every time.

Thanks for the replies all, did try to reply sooner from teh phone but who knows where that post ended up...

I've got some good ideas of rifles now that I didn't know about before to try out / look at. It will definitely have to be a semi-auto for the two shots in two second exposure target.

FWIW I tried a different Ruger 10/22 at the club last night and got my first 6 x's - I'll have to find out what they changed in it to make it different to the one I was using the past three months. It looked a bit older and sadder and was just tucked away in the corner of the cabinet and it would never have come out were it not for a new member who like me is also a lefty (ambidextrous stock).

This has been good to open my eyes as to what's out there....I had expected the choice to be nearly infinite in terms of options and price points (as it is with shotguns for example!) but it does seem more limited.

Thanks again all.

For your hunting rifle opt for a CZ452 , for your targets use an Anshutz target rifle . the best of both worlds then.

Thanks Rowan;

This - http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/anschutz-msr-rx22-precision-22-lr - would be in price range. For a 'non classic' style rifle, I do quite like the form follows function look of it.

Do you know if 'tactical' semi autos are going to be banned by the EU or not? That's one concern of this type of rifle.

      Hello all.?
Just an update as it has been a while.I have been looking for a subsonic .22LR hollow point that shoots well from a cold clean bore and have recently started using RWS subs which do well, typically from the first shot..I have used a few different brands of subsonic H.P.s and they all group quite well after 5 or so fouling shots, but RWS like the cold clean bore, needless to say I am a happy and for me, decent shooting.?.I have used the RWS before in the old Annie 1416 DG and it was equally consistent in that rifle.
A couple of typical below all from a cold clean bore..My scope is a Hawke Vantage x2 -x7 32mm A.O. with illuminated reticle which is a great field scope but lacks magnification for target shooting so is sometimes difficult to deduce if a shot has been pulled, but I love the scope.
      Have a good weekend all.?

Hi all, just an update.I have had this rifle for over a year now and still really like it a lot. I have not modified it in any way and it is as out of the box.
It is an easy rifle to shoot well with a pretty good trigger (pulling at 2.6 lbs out of the box and very smooth), accurate, lightweight and utterly reliable.
I now have the benefit of hindsight and  purchasing this rifle was a good decision and I would do so again absolutely.
I use an inexpensive but very good Hawke Vantage x2-x7 32mm A.O. scope with an illuminated reticle. I sometimes use a SAK moderator on the gun, a very good mod.
      Have a good weekend.?.
