Loathed by most, loved by a few,an unworthy opponent to some terrier men, yet a more than worthy opponent by others. Some like to kill the odd few now and then, others like myself hunt them on a weekly

Most of mine too.

foxbolter i'm not going to get pulled in to a debate over how strong a rat is or is not,ive bin working terriers for over 35 years and over twenty on other quarry, so i'll have my opinion and you have

I wasn't looking for a debate I didn't start the rubbish about a big bit and my post is as I think it is .why make a poxy rat out as something it isn't you started a debate with u r first childish post and personal I think rating is good for starting pups to work you can sometimes see good in a pup when it as a rat but it wouldn't put me off the pup if it wasn't very interested in them and as for terriers for rating being failed earth dogs well they sometimes are not all the best with u r rating nothing personal either it was the way you put it across and watch those rats when their in a block end they go nasty then

Look foxbolter i know all about block ends so lets agree to disagree and put an end to this, lets both put our slippers on and chill, atb keith j.

The brown rat very weak animal sometimes couldn't survive in a cage trap in a night of rain the average brown rat can open its jaws a massive centimeter it can be killed by a miniature Yorkshire terrier with one fatal bite they are sometimes hunted by plumber terriers which owners think they are special because they can catch a rat and fight with it till the rat eventually loses the mighty battle and then as battle after battle with other rats

I'm sure rats would survive a nuclear war where as dogs and humans woundlnt rats are survivors and very tough I've trapped rats by my folw on rainy shitty nights and never came to a dead one in a cage trap

Good to see terriers working,no matter what the sport.don't know much about ratting but some terriers are obviously better at it than others. Men strive to have the best terrier for their chosen sport so as long as terriers are worked regardless of type or work it can be only a good thing.

Well said shovel,we do strive to get the best terriers for the job in hand ,i agree most terriers will have pop at rats and most will kill, are they ratting terriers ?well not in my opinion .ive seen plenty terriers jib at rats after receiving a few bites .How many different types of dogs go to ground and flush foxes, are these earth dogs ?well i think not.my point being a good ratting terrier needs a lot of stamina a damn god nose as rats tend to frequent some of the most filthy hell holes known to man,and a degree of toughness, yes toughness,as one or two rats may be nothing to a dog when getting bit ,but try 20 ,30 ,50 or even a hundred.now your dog is recieving a bit punishment and the same dog pushes its nose in the shite and comes out with another rat hanging on its face. And agility as rats can and do move quick especially in small places over short distances.so yes some terriers and types are better at the job than others so you can and do srtive for the best dog for the job.so if our dogs do the jobs asked of them then happy days, and again this is not comparing every man to his own, this is about what is required in my opinion in a good ratting terrier .so happy hunting all,atb keith j.
