The Sett - Ranulph Fiennes

Recommended Posts

It's a cracking read , it's fiction ,but based on some true characters .

Here's just a bit from the book , a couple of antis are going undercover to try and get evidence against a lancashire digger.

' get yourself a northern terrier or a lurcher', the RSPCA contact had advised Amy .' Two would be better, but one will do. That'll get you on the same wavelength as these people . Don't open your mouth ,lass. Let you bloke do the talking if he has to. Best of all is to break the ice by complimenting them on their dogs . Things to say ? Ok..." He's nice , in't he ! Real good-looker. Deep chest , thick neck ,good legs ". Remember a lurchers in his prime at two or three and the pundits like to say he should have a "neck like drake , tail like a rat and feet like a cat " .

Amy's accent was poorly disguised upper-class, but Barry was ethnic Wirral , a version of Liverpudlian which would not raise antennae among the earthy terrier fraternity. Amy simply kept quiet and wore a t-shirt under her unzipped barbour , that way, dumb but sexy ,she was an asset like raddle.

'Ask them about their dogs', the RSPCA man had suggested . ' that's the best way to get them talking because they always love to brag . How good their dog is , what it can do and take? They may not immediately specify badgers or foxes . They'll probably say its steady on all quarry " . Theyll maybe go on to say , " thirty rabbits in a night ,a dog fox single handed without a problem" and " straight don the beam to the quarry ", meaning with a searchlight and usually , a fallow deer .'

' so how do we bring the talk round to badgers without raising their suspicions?' Amy asked .

' don't you worry . They're often not the brightest of people, these b*****ds . They'll spill the beans about their dogs can do and more because they're so keen to impress . I mean , within an hour or two , especially if you buy the rounds in the drinks tent , these geezers will tell you how many deer they've poached even though they've never met you before .
