Shark Fishing In The Uk

Recommended Posts

A good few years ago I fished a few times for porbeagles out of Bude. They used to come in following the vast shoals of pollack which we used on traditional balloon rigs set to drift in a slick trail that we put out. At times the sport was very frantic when they were on the feed and we were often fishing well within a mile of the coast. Three of us would book the charter to allow a good share of the runs. Did cost us over £80 each for the day, and now with a mortgage and kids those days are long gone.

Remember one of those sessions when my mate hooked up to a real monster that he played for well over an hour and just like a scene from Jaws we needed to reverse the boat with waves crashing over the stern in order to gain any line. However, in all that time not much line was gained and eventually the hook hold gave.

The skipper Karl is really conservation minded and as far as possible all fished were quickly unhooked whilst still in the water to avoid unnecessary stress to these wonderful creatures. If you have the money it is well worth a trip and Karl and his boat Mantis are a pleasure to fish from. This is a picture of one of mine just before release:

And there is a video of the Shark Conservation Society out on the boat as well:

As I remember we motored out to the right of Bude, we went through a load of pinnacle rocks on the way out to collect some bait. On one of the trips I remember seeing that secret listening base on the coast with all those big white domes. Once we quietly motored over to a basking shark and got within a few metres of it, an amazing sight.
