Which Springer To Buy?

Taking your advice on board fellas I think I might look more at .177 now. In these early days it sounds like an easier option for getting the pellet home in the right areas. The last thing I want is a hedgerow full of injured rabbits and pigeons.

 

Plus it gives me a good excuse to buy another rifle in.22.

How does a Weihrauch HW77k carbine in.177 with a Hawke Eclipse 3-12x50 AO IR Mil-Dot scope sound for a first rifle?

 

Obviously I will take your advice and go and shoulder a few before I buy, but like the look of this at least.

stunning rifles if its a newer one your gonna be happy the older ones had a stock with a lower cheek rest which some found a bit of a problem for eye to scope alinement , i had a 77k a few years back and loved it then for some reason i traded it in for a pcp , the pcp is now gone and a full length 77 in.22 in the original stock with low mounts and a 3-9x40 scope do me proud at the range and have put plenty of meat on the table too , also have a hw97kt in .177 , but the 77 just feels natural when shouldered . your gonna have to shoulder them to get a better feel for the guns ,

 

to tell the truth either 77 or 97 will do you proud if you do your bit , i should never have sold my first one but you live and learn .

You said it already Mac. As a first rifle the HW77K is a stunner that will be your last! Unless of course, you sell it...then you'll wish you hadn't. My one regret with my HW77 .22 full length is...I wish I had bought one sooner. The memories of stalking and hide shooting rabbits and pigeons I have with mine are priceless!

 

HW97 is a great rifle. No question! But, owning both these rifles is a genuine pleasure and they will never be sold on.,

 

I have to say though, my HW77 is like a good friend. Never lets me down out there. I've won spring rifle competitions with it and put hundreds of rabbits into the pot with it. This is the one rifle I would keep if, God forbid, I had to lose all my other guns.

 

Try one for yourself and see how you get on.

I see you own a TX200HC as well as the Weihrauchs. Which in your opinion shoots best straight out he box? I've read on some sites that people feel the Air Arms rifle is better from the box, but after some tinkering and tuning the HW97K is a better rifle?

 

Would you say the 77 is better than the 97K for small game?

 

Whichever I get will be in.22. As suggested by someone on here though I may just end up getting two rifles anyway. Who do you think makes the best carbine air arms or weihrauch?

Hi Alistair.

 

The TX200HC I have is a beauty. It really is a superbly well made and precision accurate hunter. So if you like the look and feel of it, you may decide this is the rifle for you. However, I find Weihrauch are more for my style of shooting than anyone elses make. I come from a traditional shooting background, including a lot of time in the RAF Regiment as a sniper and instructor and the HW77 feels just like an Enfield .303. Big, solid and chunky with just the right weight in balance. I used a sniping version of the Enfield SMLE .303 in the Falklands war, as well as my SLR; and a hefty spring rifle has all the qualities of military weight rifles I'm long used to. The HW77 comes closer to perfection for me than any other spring air rifle. The HW97K is a beautiful rifle too. It has all the wallop in a sleek sporter stock and is a lovely length as a carbine-sized hunter/sporter. I can honestly tell you Alistair, both of mine ar more accurate than a PCP...because their weight makes them a better platform to control your aim and build your shot from!

 

It's what you enjoy and what you get used to Alistair. The thing is to try all the rifles you like the look of but, for me, the HW77 is the finest spring rifle there currently is. It is the daddy of all of em. Including Air Arms and Walther LG etc. etc.

 

In .22 calibre it is a powerful rabbit killer and precision accurate to long ranges. 50 yard head shots and further are no problem, if you know how to do your bit, of course. And that's more than you need for hunting bunnies.

you need to try before you buy,to make sure the rifle fits.

3 good spring rifles.

 

do not overlook the LGU for the money cracking rifle out of the box!

 

 

The LGU is well underated, it will hold its own against the TX & 97 .

Was in the same boat and went for a tx200 and love it feels like a tuned 97 out of the box. My friends just bought a 97 and feels like he is a little cheated because he needs to tune it to feel right for him when shooting BUT the 97 is a fantastic gun also only down to personal taste and why ever suits you.
