Three Night Pricket

Recommended Posts

The foresters had been busy earlier in the year in some woodland on one of my permissions , what was almost impenetrable wood was now open , tons of chestnut , hazel birch etc had been cleared and new growth had already sprouted ...an open invitation to the deer to start browsing it of .Once the maize surrounding the wood had been harvested the clearfell was a good bet to produce , a temporary seat was erected in what I thought was a good spot , I could see a fair bit out to about 90mtr , obviously there where obstruction but I reckoned their should be enough clearance between the remaining trees.. Ninety minutes in several doe's moved right to left through the clearfell , any one of which I could have shot had they been on the menu , a few minutes behind them a single pricket browsing , slowly but 10 mtr to far back , all I could see was his head with two small spikes , moving up & down as he browsed the new growth ,twenty minutes I waited for him to come clear always just safe the light failed me & saved him ..

Second night was a repeat of the first except their was a small group of bucks who just walked straight through the clearfell leaving me no real chance to get on target .The deer where here but getting a clear shot was proving to be a problem .

Third night .. deciding not to move the seat to another position in the clearfell I got set up early , 5 o'clock & waited ..the doe's , 9 now walked right to left as they did the previous evenings , there numbers boosted by a white doe & fawn .No bucks ..I was thinking I'd give it 15min before I would call it a night the pricket from the 1st evening made a appearance not from the right as every deer had done but from the left 60 mtr away, he was good enough to stand perfectly still for the few seconds it took to put the ir on him & squeeze..In the chiller at 71lb ..
