Can Anyone Tell Me What This Is?

Aye, they do love a bit of fuschia.......

About 10 years ago, they used to love the younger leaves on my grape vine. I was aware that the leaves were getting munched, but didn't know the culprits. I then started finding 'pellets' on the table, and wondered what was leaving them, sometimes there would be 8-10. I only found out by going out in the very early hours (darkness) with a small torch, and it was like 'come dine with me'. You wouldn't believe how quickly the EHM can devour young grape leaves, small wonder they were dropping all those pellets. Could never spot them during daylight.

I had to renew the covered pergola roof and unfortunately put paid to the vine, white grape, can't remember the name. I did hower replace it with 2 vines, a 'black hamburg' and a 'golden chasselas'.... but the EHM's have never returned.

The pergola and vine leaves seems to be a favourite haunt of hover flies, and I never knew that wasps attack and eat hover flies, first thing they do in decapitate them. Seen it quite a few times over the years. Even had a couple of dragon flies needed rescuing after becoming disorientated between the upper leaves and the clear plastic roof.

During the daytime the caterpillars will have been sat motionless near the base of the plant. Unless it's a dull day then they'll feed right through. I've bred thousands of these beauties....
