Steering Box Help

Recommended Posts

I have had about a Inch play in the steering wheel since I had the Motor, it didn't bother me at first but since I drove Millets which is perfect with no play I now have the arse about it :whistling:.

I was told by a guy that you can adjust play on the power steering box by turning a adjusting screw held by a lock nut as seen in the picture? the play is definitley in the box and no where else when I checked. to be Honest I don't want to touch anything to do with the steering without guidance first, can any Mechanics out there give me some advice?

Cheers

Jasper

i know on landrover/rangerover boxes you can get shims to take up the play, dont over do it or youll never turn the steering wheel.

years ago my rangie failed the mot on play in the box,put a reecon box on it,and the mot twat still failed it,took it back home swapped em back, pack it out with shims, had to drive it back to the test station in 1st gear coz i couldnt turn the wheel it was that tight,it passed, back home shims out, reecon box returned everyone happy :feck:

REMEMBER NOT TO OVER DO IT AS A LITTLE BIT OF SLACK/PLAY IS REQUIRED. I PRESUME YOU'VE CHECKED THE STEERING JOINTS AND TRACK ROD ENDS FOR WEAR BEFORE YOU START ON THE BOX.

Cheers for that Rooster . I checked over all the rest of the steering and all seems ok, the play looks to be in the box, I'll try moving it a bit at a time and see how it goes!! the other thing I have noticed is when the engine is running it takes some of the play out of the steering, it definitley has more play when the engine is switched off :hmm:....

Hi Japer,

I am not sure if it will work on the nevara but you may have air in the power steering system, on a lot of motors this can be removed by turning the steering full lock then full lock the opposite way  but be carefull when you tweek the adjustment screw I once over done it on a LDV van and the steeing box snapped  ......luckily I was stationary and just pulling out of a pub car park space......100 metres down the road was a busy roundabout on my route home :icon_eek:
