Any Tips For A Newbie?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone who has had any sort of experience on hunting and shooting rabbits with a air rifle would mind giving me some tips/ advice as like the title says I'm a new 'hunter' but not so new to shooting so any advice on rabbit hunting would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!! :D

Walk the land in the evenings/mornings looking for signs of droppings and runs that they use, once spotted or found where the are they will always return even after disturbance (gunshots).

Laying in ambush is your best bet and from 4-9 pm I have found is the best time for me but this may be different for you...rabbits have poor depth perception so if you move slow and low to the ground you can get up close to them (within a couple of yards), practise makes perfect and it will take time to become efficient at this but also take time to single out where they are...be patient and good luck!

Would be interested to see how you get on, any other questions or queries feel free to ask.

Being that your using an air rifle I would use targets at varying ranges in practice just too get the idea of the drop over the varying distances, not teaching you how too suck eggs as im sure you know what to do i think it just helps to emphasize this as you will be sat prone , crouched or kneilling so you'll see them appear from surrounding warren entrances which can be more than 50m away and in some cases 100m's away.

Next time I go I'll put together a quick video on my hide, shooting at varying ranged targets (like you said) and hopefully maybe bag myself a rabbit or two, I'll upload it to YouTube and I will send you the link. Thanks for saying about the book I will have to check that out.

If you are able to get hold of the book Rabbit control by Jackie Collins (eBay) the info is invaluable and designed for us small game hunters.

"Jackie Collins":laugh::laugh: You got something else going on in your head. :whistling:

I use a p7 lenser if you wanna check that series of torch out as there's many models which vary in power and come with attachments for a scope and press switch, batteries last roughly 60 hrs so pick up rechargeable and your ready to go, it also has a 4 other coloured lenses if you buy them from eBay separatly..dont use it much as there isn't many out at night on some of the land ive been using for the past couple of years but as I've got more land recently who knows....£45 off eBay aswell!

Pigeon shooting on a small farm between Darlington and Richmond, must be able to go mid week not just weekends, this could be a nice little pigeon shooting permission for the right person, I’ve had some good days here but just can’t get there as often as the owner would like

      Hi all,
My Dad  and I have rented a land in Spain. 30 min from Gibraltar airport. We are looking for 5 hunters to share the expenses. Currently i live in Bristol so what i do is to take weekend flights almost every month so im happy that you to join me.
      The land has:
      3 ibex license sep-january
      8 red deers sep-feb
      12red  deer does
      5 roe deers May- September
      Wildboar all the year
The land also includes house and my father is happy to pick up you at the airport.
The price is £2000 per season/hunter
if you know someone who might be interested give me a ring.
The idea is to share the expenses not to sell a hunt as we are not professional outfitters so we are just looking for fellow hunters who are interested in big game shooting to share the experience.
