Has Anyone Ever Trained A Deaf Dog To Retrieve?

Hi, my mate has a deaf Springer spaniel he was planning on training to retrieve. Has anyone had any experience/success with this? He has house trained a deaf dog before and has a couple of retrievers already.

It does sound a bit mad I know but after taking the p*ss out of him I thought, if you can train a deaf dog and you can train a dog to retrieve why can't you train a deaf dog to retrieve.

 

It's just a young pup not even house trained yet so he's just deciding whether it's worth training to retrieve or just to train it. He's keeping the dog regardless of whether it will retrieve.

 

He adopted the other deaf dog because the owner got frustrated with it. This one was the last of a litter and he couldn't leave it behind. It's just how things turned out that he has 2 deaf dogs.

I had a deaf lurcher that retrieved, it was a collie cross. Retrieving was a game & it came naturally to her. Not sure about a spaniel but might be worth a shot, my lurchers recall was a wave of the arm but would depend on her looking lol

Yes it can be done,old fella i know trains his dogs with hand signals.It will take longer and your need a good bond with the dog but it can be done.

Thanks for the replies guys. He's going to give it a go. Honestly I don't think I would have the patience to but he does. He's just glad to know people have had some success.
