Ok, so while were on the subject, what constitutes a tune?? IMO a tune is done by a professional gunsmith,it involves lathe work,a bit like blue printing really!

Is it called a tune simply because it's done by sorme well known people NO!

some call it a tune,like your self,i call it fettling

I know some make their own piston seals hence the lathe work etc but it's as I said in the video, it's the way I do things, it works and happy with the results.

i can see it works well,from the chrono readings

 

It would be interesting to see one of "my rifles" up against others from other well known industry guys just to see how well it does.

that we can sort out at the next meet as i have said "or i will eat my hat" if i happen to be corrected can you bring a choclit hat

Thanks for putting the videos up Darryl really enjoyed watching them. Was that your stage 1 tune?? It's really inspired me to have a go, in fact I've ordered a few bits and bobs to give it a try.

 

I was going to get it professionally tuned at some stage but after seeing what you've achieved, is it really all necessary, as you've shown everyone what's achievable without the use of a specialist tools etc.

 

Air rifles are pretty basic tools, surely there is only so much people can do to them to improve there performance? Two feet per second spread speaks for itself.

Im not intentionally calling other "Pro Tuners" for what they do/charge for either.... Just with it being quite common place nowadays, Im just interested in what people would recognise as a tune

Thanks for posting the vids, unfortunately when I owned my HW77 there was no internets (it was a while ago!) but I would have loved to have had a fettle with it. I did think about it but didn't want to brake it as repairs would have been a lot of pub work to pay for it.

 

Only thing I fettled was my Gat pistol, even a basic trigger and piston polish helped a lot but you know what they say about a sow's ear...or polishing a !

 

I ended up fettling, tuning and in the end designing and building mountain bikes (and components) for a living. Perhaps my next rifle will get "the treatment"

Thanks for posting the videos Darryl. I learned a lot from them, especially about the polishing and relubing.

 

One thing I would have liked to see that wasn't included was your degreasing of the trigger mechanism using Blue Wonder. How does that stuff work? Since it comes in a tube and not a spray form I wondered if you had to add something to it to act as an agent. Do you just flush it through the trigger cassette or dismantle the mechanism and degrease the parts separately?

 

I thought about spraying a degreaser in at one end and letting it drain out. Then a squirt of BreakFree CLP or something similar and letting that drain out as well.

 

Probably not a very good idea, but I don't feel confident enough to dismantle the Rekord trigger.

Darryl your a truck driver not a professional gunsmith you don't have what it takes to 'tune' an air rifle! Your 'tune' only took an hour on camera and basic tools so your results a far to good to be true!!

 

On a more serious note iv learnt things about the hw97kt I didn't know so from me it's a great set of videos showing lads who maybe can't afford a 'professional tune' how to make their rifles that little bit sweeter.

 

Another thing is if you ever fancy a go using custom spring guilds and top hat give me a shout I know a couple of toolrooms which we use at work and have TIG welded for myself, that would do me a favour if I ever needed one

Yes I'm a lorry driver, but have an engineering background and given the time I know I have "what it takes" to tune a rifle.

The "tune" took a lot longer than an hour I can promise you that but I think if I left the camera running during the whole process (3.5hrs) viewers would be asleep.

 

As for the results I'll let you come to the house and try it over the chrono, or even pop down the range and shoot it....

 

The videos were meant to show what can be done with "basic tools" to make a great rifle better

At least you learned something from them

Those videos were brilliant! Gave me confidence to have a go on stripping and relubing my Venom tuned '77.

 

Would there be any marked differences in doing that with an already tuned gun?

I tried to strip my 97 a week ago, could not budge the end block at all. Had to give up. Could probably have done it with a vice and a longer lever but using the spanner hitting approach it just wouldn't budge. Rifle now in SFS for the pro's to sort it out.
