Basic Heel Work, Cocker Spaniel

Recommended Posts

couple of points to add: im not in favour of using a lead as a windmill or to punish the dog, because then the lead becomes a weapon and not one of walking time.

also try walking with your dog in a line and every 15 paces do a U turn or a 360 deg turn turn into the dog and away from the dog and gently push him with your foot if you are turning into the dog.

nothing wrong with tugging on the lead in a firm manner but every time you do so don't pull it up, pull it to the right side, and use the word "heel" as you pull.

Hi I've found this topic interesting with some helpful advice. I have a Bedlington Terrier who is 12 weeks although he won't be used for a gun dog I do like the principles of gun dog training I feel heel work is important to me especially when off the lead. With what has been already said do you think I can do the same with my dog? Also at 12 weeks would it be a good time to start heel work training?

I'm new to dogs and training but would like to get it right, Is there a big difference in terriers and spaniel's?

All the best Kieren.
