I'd love to but I do need fairly reliable internet and run several computers for work and I'd be too worried about not having a reliable power supply.

If I thought I could do it I would though, I looked in to it a while back. We've been planning to move to Shropshire or the Welsh boarders, it's a bit of a fantasy (read too bloody expensive) but I'd love a few acres and a bit of woodland so I could keep some live stock and have a few poly tunnels etc.

Hi mate, thanks for asking. The wood burner gets it bloody roasting! A few times I've had to open to caravan door and shut the vents to let the fire die down a bit as it gets too warm. I think its one

satellite broadband  my biggest concern would be power if going fully off grid, as your looking at either solar power/wind generator with a 12v set up with batteries and an inverter or else a diesel generator or most likely a combination of the two, heating and hot water are easy enough although i think. i would opt for a solid fuel cooker come boiler that was loaded from outside the house to cover most and a stand alone log burner for that extra comfort, it would seem the best option is hydro-power if a good water source is located nearby

It's more the reliability that's an issue I'd imagine those dishes are very susceptible to high winds. I can probably run my work on slow ADSL (I've managed with 3G in the past).

Hopefully 4G will come to rural areas.

we live near a car test facility that has just announced a 400 million quid expansion and we should be getting the fastest broadband in the country as part of the package

Only just seen these comments.

All was going well, I got the log burner going and sorted out my veg patch etc. I was starting to look at solar power when the land owner dropped the bomb that the land is about to be repossessed!

f*****g wanker. Army it is then :)

I've read your thread with a lot of interest so a shame it didn't work out, at least the shooting should be easy enough for you in the army.

Atb for it
