First Day With Mentor...

Spent my first day with my mentor today. Really enjoyed myself.

Before today I had never even held a bird of prey. I have watched videos on YouTube of birds flying and seen displays at game fairs for years and often considered getting my own bird but I wouldn't rush into something without knowing what I was doing and until now I didn't have anyone to show me the ropes.

It was a great day to go over to his because today was day 1 of manning and kitting out the 2 young male harris hawks. 16 weeks old and not been touched since they had their rings fitted... It was an experience!

I watched them have their anklets and jesses fitted and we weighed them and then I manned one for a bit. Well if you can call it manning. Mainly me picking it back upright every time it fell off my fist! Lol.

Then I spent some time with his older harris female who is 13. This is me with her...

practice doing it with one hand and 2 knots are far safer than one especially with a harris that will pick at it lol

I use the lasso knot onto a carabiner, clip it onto the perch ring then falconers knot on top so theres no chance of the knot coming of the clip,

then when i pick the bird up to go out i just unclip the carabiner onto the glove d ring and im off

So the carabiner stays with the bird at all times?

Except when you swap mews jesses to flying jesses of course.
