Philluk 181
im on the proces of doing it finding it a bit hard tho its not hard its very simple, take in stages and make sure you master one before moving on. Stage 1, when you walk on or off lead along a field blow the whistle once - dog will sit - say heel and walk off. if he does not sit blow whistle and say sit whilst pushing gently on his back. walk another 20ft do the same again and slowly you can drop the word sit you just blow, now this could take a day a week a month keep at it. then and only then he will click 1 pip means sit, stage 2, walk around field either with or without lead blow once (dog will sit) take one step sideways turn and face dog hand out use the stay word as you walk a few steps back and return to the dog. do this many times and then drop the stay word. Stage 3, walk with dog blow once and keep walking, you can turn and look at dog to check, if dogs walks take him back to where he was when you blew. now you have a dog that knows when you blow he sits and then it can be done at a few feet away. but he wont do it a few feet away if he wont do it at your feet. it is important if the dogs walks take him back, and you need a sit within 5 seconds, 5 seconds to a running dog is a few meters, its not when the dog wants its when you want. stage 4 when you have mastered the other 3 Quote Link to post
activeviii 8
tried the stop whistle with an expandable lead the dog comes back and drops beside me lol i made videos of my progress to look over to see any faults ill try get them up Forget the long lead for the moment. to much to fast. Do the short work first, im on the proces of doing it finding it a bit hard tho its not hard its very simple, take in stages and make sure you master one before moving on. At the very beginning did you get the 'Sit' command spot on. this is the basic and back bone off the training. when you say sit, you mean 'Sit' it needs to be sharp and none of this begrudgingly sitting, shuffling to get comfy, then parking the bum on floor. Sit means 'Sit' no if's, not buts. once you have the verbal command sorted you can then move on. on the lead, walk a little way, let the dog relax a bit. don't just put a lead on, walk 2 foot and start training. let the dog relax a little and things will normally run a lot easier. so on the lead, walk, verbal 'Sit', dog sits. Now move off, 'Heal', dogs is up and walking to heal. This time you say 'Sit' and give single tone on whistle. Dog will sit as you have told it to. but its hearing the whistle as back ground noise. means nothing to dog at the moment but it will put the two together and i bet you by day 3 your dog is sitting to the whistle. do not over cook the dog with the training, i find a 10 minute train 3 times a day will do a hell of a lot more than one 30 minute session. leave the session on a positive note and put the dog away after the whistle training, do not give it a retrieve of play time. a dog will lay down and run things through its head after the session. it needs this time to remember things. if the last thing it did was a retrieve then it runs that though its head. I do all my new work in the garden, there is no distraction smells so dog whats to be with me. not off hunting, noise to floor to see whats been around. We all have our own ways of training, some worse than others, some better. it takes a few dogs before you start understanding where you went wrong and why things happen the way they do but it sort of gets easier. by the way, all my dogs are now just for pigeon, rough and duck shooting. i don't need then to be pin sharp any more. 'Out' 'Sit' or stop, recall and turn are all i really use now. its all i need them to do. Quote Link to post

jrobsm1 5
for me the stop whistle starts with the hand signal when you feed the pup command word raised hand flat palm and a food bowl in the other hand, soon as pup looks up at the food/hand walk in a bit and it should park its bum . later on combine this signal with a whistle when out with the pup just one time a session, but don't do it when feeding.I only use same whistle or command for sit- stay- stop, this is the exact same way I trained my dog hes now 6 month old retrieving ,stops sits on 1 pip or flat hand retrieves on 2 pips and recalls on 5 but people do things differently and want different things from them it just works this way for me I hunt with air rifles so hes retrieving most apart from feather out of the trees from the ground ie rabbits Quote Link to post
