Opinions On The Power Of Air Rifles

Recommended Posts

Just very quickly......Mental health issues dont prevent you from having/obtaining FAC or SGC I have both.

Makes it complicated, frustrating and time consuming but not impossible.

I have had 2 spells of being, as someone else said earlier in the thread 'nuts' the last spell lasted for 18 months during which I was very unwell.

I had to have several 'crisis' meetings with psychiatrists, GP etc and they all agreed that i was 'neither suicidal or homicidal'

I also have a couple of serious criminal convictions (20 years ago).

I actually feel the limit for airguns is about right and if you want more then get off your arse and apply.

well done

ive read the posts guys a lot of you think they should be licenced for safety thats a fair comment guys i was interested to see how many people think the limit should be raised and the 12ft lbs limit removed to give us all that little bit more edge on power possibly that we might need in the field of hunting / shooting with out the hassle of applying for our certs.

Its like anything if its abused then it gets bad reports weather its our 12ft lbs or if it was over this limit it still gets a bad report weather the airgun was or would be used for crime the fact is if its in the area of a crime then its the airgun that gets the bad press so it really dont make any sense that a limit over 12ft lbs would be any more affected than if it was 12ft lbs limit the hatred for airguns amongst the general public will always stand the mere mention of airguns makes the public cringe and point the finger.

the standard 12ft lbs will always hold bad press amongst the public so in my opinon why have a limit at all.

but fair comments guys the license is what keeps the power to a limit that allows us to use them with out hassle most of the time.

a alot of you agree if you want more power then fac the fact is guys not all of us have the rimmy land for such a massive power increase my thoughts was just that limit of say 20ft lbs would be a nice power not to much and to little with out the massive power level of a rimmy something we could benefit from for all of us with out the hassle of a rimmy type of certs. according to the law the standard airrifle has to now be locked away the same as a certified power level air rifle i think if any one can put me right on this one and tell me yes or no.

i personaly wouldnt take a shot over 30 35 yards for my shooting but if i had a power level i felt confident with such as 20ft lbs then i would be able to practice these skills knowing and having confidence in the power of my air rifle and that the shot will be effective for the animal im shooting

i have seen on dvd and heard people taking shots with a 12ft lbs out to 50 yards i again personaly think this is too far with this power of rifle especially for the safety aspect of a clean kill and the respect to the animal.

i was in the states many years ago when a lad was killed by a gang weilding guns instead of shooting him they carved him with a knife but as the public had seen the guns they was to blame the knife was mentioned once and the guns lost count

i dont mean to offend by my mentioning the 50 yards but in my opinon with a 12ft lbs i think is too much.

I went to a guy 2 or 3 months ago who had been shot 5 times in the head with an air pistol.

Thankfully this was a low powered legal one 6fps??

Only 3 of the pellets actualy penetrated the flesh/neck and one in hand from defence.

I still think its an ideal limit, not impossible to kill someone but unlikely.

murders with air guns are very rare almost nil.

Reading it now and my understanding of it is that you can shoot within 50 ft providing no-one is interupted, endangered or injured and the pellet doesn't leave the boundary. So how exactly do you go about lying down in the middle of a public road firing an air rifle without breaking the law???

Correct :clapper:

Public Highways often cross private land. And if there is no one going to be interupted, endangered or injured, then your left with the old "If a tree falls in the forrest and there is no one to hear it, does it make a sound?" scenario.

Nonsense!!! Whether the public road goes through private land or not...its still a public road and you cannot fire an air rifle in a public place so well and truly against the law!!!

Anyway...i only gave my opinion with regards to the original post. I think they should be licensed and the power should be whatever the license holder wants or needs it to be

Right TONY and AIRGUN GUY.. I want to hear your oppinions on this video. :D regarding shooting in the public places, so if you could have a watch and let me know your thoughts please... lol

I would love to walk round bradford town centre shooting flying rats.. litterally id be there all day! ;)

If you know your set up very well and conditions are good and your comfortable at shooting at that distance why not, I have many a time with clean kills

Well if you were to jump in your car...drive down...get the rifle out and start popping away at the them then you would without a doubt get locked up and certified ha!!! Didn't watch the whole vid but they would obviously have special dispensation from local council...police etc and there would be safety measures in place. Looks as though it's very early morning when there will be few people around. They would probably have a spotter, safety official and a firearms cop in tow!!! My 2 bobs worth

Agreed. Many people take shots at this range with sub 12FPE. I only really shoot at night on golf course permissions so i always try to get within 40 yards...that's my comfort zone

private property ..more than 50 ft from the center of the highway the only problem I can see is he is using an unlicensed lethal weapon .If he had a license the guns pellets would have magic safety powers .

I also had a cat shot.....they then poisoned a load of cats around here with antifreeze.

We all know who did it, just couldnt prove it!

And not an idiot or a yob, just didnt like cat poo I guess!

You all know who it was and you've allowed that creature to get away scott free?

Antifreeze can be dangerous stuff if not handled with care :whistling:

More likely to be a sub-2 Umarex model and very close range.

All the ones capable +5 ft/lbs take a serious time to reload, things like the Sheridan's EB, Crosman's, Alecto and HW45 etc....

Even the lower 2+ ones are nearly (if not all) single shot.

@SRT Im back online using a dongle from O2 so video is out of the question for now :cray:
