Pump Action Shotguns. Worth Buying?

Looking to buy a new shotgun, I'm looking at a few semi automatics but while I was browsing a noticed pump actions as well. I'd never considered one before nor do I know anyone that has one. They are cheaper but I can't see them being any quicker than a O/U SS. Anyone have any experience with them or opinions?

I've used the odd one. A good semi auto is better but as you say more expensive. I've considered one in 12g as a knock about when doing the rounds on the shoot but my auto fits that bill so really no need. If I didn't have the auto then I would certainly be after one, probably with a 24" barrel.

 

I think also most 410s are in pump and rarely found in semi auto format because the lack of power increases the number of faults with the semi auto cycling mechanism.............

I had a ten shot remmy pump n I just couldn't get on with it...if you can can hold of a decent semi there cool but need a decent cartridge to cycle them....

extra shot's handy if your decoying or rabbit shooting but no to be seem on a pheasant shoot

Thats the thing an auto makes it redundant really. If I could pick up a really cheap one I'd take it just as a knock about as you said. Wouldnt be looking for a 410 either, wouldnt have a use for it!

I'm not even sure that you can legally get a 10 shot here in Ireland. Seems a bit OTT, sure if you didnt hit it after 3

Thats all I'll be using it for really, pheasants are scarce enough out my way lately and I have another U/O anyway

Depends on the use really. The pump wont be much quicker than a o/u or sbs in real life. Although you do get some guys who can pump like a lunatic. Personally I find the pumping action does knock me off the aim for the 2nd shot a bit and even now i feel a bit self conscious then doing the old "rambo" click click in a quiet field full of rabbits. Ive a mossberg 500 pump in .410 and use that for rabbits, ive also a beretta 391 semi which I use on the clays. The semi is definately faster for me and is a lovely gun. Not had any problems with jams or cycling, even on 21g cartridges. But, price is a big difference. Your looking at 600->700quid for a 2nd hand beretta 391 and you can pick up cheap pump actions for £100. I even saw a brand spanking new Hatsan Escort pump action for £225.

I rang the shop I usually deal with yesterday and he said he has some second hand berettas for in around that price, I'm going to go for a look next week and see the conditon. He said he'd do me a good price on laurona semi's brand new! Anyone know much about them? Can't say I've ever come across one.
