Hi

Four years ago, I joined a local shoot as a beater. Not knowing much at all about shooting, I was interested in how the guns knew where to stand. Obviously, there were peg markers, but how did the guns know which peg to stand on? It was all down to drawing a number. However, most of the guns got confused and forgot their numbers. Before each drive, we would have the situation where Shoot Captain and Keeper would have to position the guns on the right pegs.

With 6 drives, and 9 guns, a rotation method was needed, so I came up with a laminated card which shows rotated drive numbers, with the first being circled as the gun identifier (see attached). These are drawn at the meet.

These are made in 60mm x 90mm portrait or landscape format, can be personalised with any photo, accomodate any number of guns or drives, and are relatively cheap to produce. They have proven to be so succesful, that I've started making them for the shoots of guests who are visiting.

Do you think that there could be a market for these?

If there's an interest in more detail, please PM me.

Why do 3 numbers go vertical and 3 horizontal? And which numbers represent which drive? I'm assuming the mornings drives go down and the afternoons drives go across, moving up by 4 each drive? Got to be honest, if I was given that I would be a bit confused at first. I would probably favour a more intuitive design, something really straightforward so there is absolutely no confusion.

I think you could sell them if made from a thin plastic or engraved/stamped brass and come with a nice leather wallet to hold them (price wise I would think that should fetch around £100 mark). But they don't allow a shoot captain the freedom to improvise a bit, like adding another drive if necessary.

I like the European way, 8 guns, think its evens up 3 odds down 2 every drive, stops you getting the same neighbours on each drive..

haha.....some guns find it hard to do the "move up 2" system so making it more difficult seems strange. If they would just remember there own number instead of trying to remember everybodys they would find it a piece of piss!....

One of the great wonders of the driven shoot........... why guns can't count and why beaters can't walk in a line...........

Works perfectly. As long as the number of guns is divisible by a whole number, with the rotations based on a different whole number, there are no conflicts. If 11 or 7 guns, then I work on guns +1 leaving a spare peg.

We had 12 Guns (3 guests) out yesterday on 8 drives and no problems. All of the guests thought it was an excellent method.

Haha no one said it was plain & simple but saves you from being stuck next to the same 2 guns every drive.. Having said that a decent host/keeper would have a pile of the printed off so each gun gets a card when he draws his first peg in the morning..

First number is one drawn

1-2-4-6-8-7

2-4-6-8-7-5

3-1-2-4-6-8

4-6-8-7-5-3

5-3-1-2-4-6

6-8-7-5-3-1

7-5-3-1-2-4

8-7-5-3-1-2
