shotgun for deer

Recommended Posts

I have been asked to shot some muntjac in a large garden and on a small holding, garden is about 15 acres and small holding is about 5 acres the surrounding areas belong to a game estate which will not allow anyone to shoot on it and will not control any of the vermin in and around this area as they do not shoot this part they do not feel it is safe to do so with a rifle I have looked around this area and can see there point as there are lots of people with live stock horses and lots of out building one mistake would mean damage of some sort. The only real choice I have is to use AAA in my 12g I have read the different laws with regards to this but can not work out if I am allowed to shot them or not as I own a 270 which would not be safe, the garden I dont think I would have a problem with as they have damaged plants trees and fencing and the lady has given up in trying to do anything with it as the deer just damage it the next day but I am still not sure as this is not a commercial set up although she does have some sheep and geese and the law was brought in to help farmers and thatchers that did not have a firearm to hand. The small holding may be a bit different as the damage they are causing to the tree and vegetation does not affect her directly but they are on her ground and although the stock fences does seem to get damaged quite a bit it is not all down to the sheep as the field next to her has horses which have been found tramping it down and the odd sheep has also been found doing a bit of damage to. I dont no if this makes a difference the fences are hawthorn hedges which over time have been pushed aside to make opening by the muntjac and now the roe which some of the live stock are now using to get into other fields if the horses come along and push it down. There is no real way of putting any real strong fencing up as it is all marsh even in the drought before the rain came there was 3, 5 inches of water setting in places. the sheep are not standing in water as there is a little higher ground. any help in what laws I can use to do this job would be much appreciated

in all honesty put up a high seat and feed into a safe shootable position, job done

That person is wrong . Muntjack are called a pest by forresters. BUT are classed as Deer in Law and are covered by the Deer Act. If you are baiting then your claim of Damage is rocky to say the least

I COULD IN THE GARDEN BUT I WOULD NEED A FREE STANDING ONE AND I DONT KNOW IF A THREE METER HIGH SEAT WOULD BE ENOUGH IN ELIMINATING THE DANGERS OF THE BULLET TRAVELLING AFTER STRIKING THE ANIMAL

can you not feed them in a position where its safe to shoot, ive herd muntjac love peanuts :whistling:

Put it this way, Do You think You could defend yourself in court for your actions ?

You would be sailing close to the wind with the Deer Act, Wildlife Act or would you keep your FAC and SGC if you were charged under Animal cruelty for wounded Deer.

If it was me, I would not risk my FAC for another persons garden plants. And from your questions you proberbly feel the same, Drives me Mad when i shoot a Muntjack to find shot gun pellets ot a .22RF bullets in them

AAA ARE A LEGAL ROUND FOR DEER ALONG WITH A SLUG BUT THAT IS A FAC ROUND AAA ARE NOT IF I HAVE READ THE LAW RIGHT I WOULD BE FINE IN COURT IF I WAS TO WOUND A MUNTJAC BUT WHAT I AM NOT SURE ABOUT IF THE LAW COVERS ME TO SHOOT A MUNTJAC UNDER THE CONDITIONS I HAVE PUT UP ABOVE I THINK I AM BUT NOT A 100% i AM A GOOD SHOT AND HAVE KNOW PROBLEMS IN PLACING A SHOT IN HE RIGHT PLACE FOR A CLEAN KILL THE PROBLEM IS WITH A BULLET WHEN IT COMES OUT THE OTHER SIDE.

ALWAYS BELIEVED TRAPPING DEER TO BE ILLEGAL UNLESS UNDER LICENCE AND RELEASING THEM IS AGAINST THE LAW UNLESS IN AN ENCLOSED AREA AND RELEASED MUST BE WITHIN 1 MILE OF CAPTURE WHICH WOULD BE NO GOOD SO IT WOULD NEED SHOOTING ON SITE AND I BELIEVE THERE IS A LAW THAT SAY YOU CAN NOT TRAP TO KILL BUT I ONLY HERE THIS BIT NOT READ IT.

i HAVE FOUND PELLETS FROM A SHOTGUN IN A RED STAGE I WOULD SAY ABOUT A NUMBER 5 REALLY PISSES ME OFF TO. YOU RIGHT I DO NOT WISH TO RISK MY FAC OR SGC FOR SOME GARDEN PLANTS BUT I HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DO THE JOB AND IN DOING THIS JOB IT WILL LEAD TO A LOT MORE LAND AS OTHERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM IF THIS JOB CANNOT BE DONE WITHIN THE LAW THEN I WILL NOT DO IT BUT THERE MUST BE AWAY OF CONTROLLING THEM IN AREAS THAT ARE NOT SAFE TO USE A FA i WOULS SAY IN MY AREA OF ABOUT 1/2 SQUARE MILE i HAVE SEEN SOME WHERE AROUND 20 MUNTJAC ON A REGULAR BASES. sO I WOULD SAY THERE ARE PROBABLY A FEW MORE ON TOP OF THAT WE FIND A COUPLE OF DEAD MUNTJAC ON THE ROAD EVERY WEEK ON A 1 MILE STRETCH.

what about balistic tips ? limeted chance if any of pass through to upper rib cage from a downwards shot from a high seat !

some meat damage , so what its pest control , they need gone and loin and haunches will still be fine ?

you could as suggested put up feed stations with bales of wet straw as back stops to absorb any fragments that might pass through .

other then trapping which i do not think is legal that sounds like the best thing i have read so far I did not think of ballistic tips and i must say i have never used them how do they work compared expanding ammo which i do know how it works. not to worried about meat damage just need to get the job done.
