A wood needs good wind protection and open areas to give it warmth for pheasants

iv just finished planting about 2000 shubs/lernisera/laural/snowberry/catonea assterfer/carnt spell, and trees leylandie, the easyest way to get some cover is to open the canopy and let some light in the worse trees are beech and sickermore cut or kill them in little clearing and often cover will grow even if its just weeds it helps, but better to plant shubs in some of them snow berry and laural are shade tolerent ,but the most important part of a wood is the edge there needs to be wind protection on all sides ie a hedge or a row of trees /leylandie, especially on the pervailing wind side also if youv"e got lot of roe deer like we have they will often hammer the laural unless you protect it its already been said but get round everwhere and find the vixen and sort it

Beech n sycamore will do no harm unless they're all planted together,if they're spaced out well amongst the other species and given plenty of room they should be fine, the pheasants will love the beech mast when they start dropping

The only good sycamore in my book is a dead one, wazz77 thank for the spelling ;) and yes i have whole woods off beech and the beech mast make my birds wonder  but on a wild bird shoot would be fine also the deer will only damage young laural plants, lloyd
